tires for 225/50/16 or should i go 225/45/16?
Kumho Ecsta v700 $148

Bfg geforce T/A kd $159

Kumho Ecsta MX $104

Pontenza S03 $153

Im leaning toward bfg geforce T/A or the S03.
Reason being, I believe strongly the bfg can hold most of what i throw at it. and the side walls are to stiff or to soft.
S03s being higher ratings, cheaper, longer life.

I am going with the V700's. I hear really good things about these tires and I heard they will last awhile too. I thought about the BFG's but they don't last long at all and are more expensive to replace if you have to do it every 5000 miles.

Jordo - the tires you a looking at are too big -
Use this : http://miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Stock tire size = 195/55-15
Diameter is 595.5 mm Circumference = 1870.8 mm 535 revs/km
Your new size = 225/50-16
Diameter is 631.4 mm Circumference = 1983.6 mm 504 revs/km
Not only are they TOO WIDE and heavy. They are too tall and will give you a 6% speedometer error. They will also hurt acceleration.
215/45-16
Diameter is 599.9 mm Circumference = 1884.6 mm 531 revs/km
which is only a 0.7% difference

Jordo-
The shape of the contact patches will not be signficantly different between a 215 section width tire and a 225 section width tire.
The SIZE of the contact patch is determined by the weight of the car - not the size of the tire. This has been discussed on numerous occasions and George Knighton would be happy to re-discuss this topic with you.
If you seek better traction - more gains are to be had from selecting the right tire compound, a better LSD and traction bars if necessary.
Channelling 350 whp through the front tires of a FWD car is going to be a mechanical challenge anyway. Torque steer is going to be a major problem - along with getting all that power to the ground in an effective manner.
Bigger wider tires are only going to worsen torque steer.
