Silverstars and Headlights in general
Hi all.
I have a 99 Accord that I recently installed 9006 as a low beam. Within 2~3 months one of them burned out. Now I read in this Forum that I could use the 9005 (Hi-Beam) in place of the 9006 (low-Beam).
1. What kind of mod do I need to do to make this fit?
2. Is there a headlight aimer or adjuster?
3. The Silverstars are only supposed to lat 1 year, how long have yours lasted?
4. Just how much brighter is the 9005 used as a low beam? Does it really blind people?
TIA.

I had the Silverstars in my car ('02 Accord) and the first 9006 burned out in less than three months, and the second in less than 6 months.
The Silverstar 9005's (high beam) have been fine so far, but then again, I rarely use the high beams.
My solution to these crappy bulbs has been to buy a set of PIAA 9006 bulbs on ebay. Every person I've spoken with has highly reccommended these bulbs.
I made the mistake of buying the cheap Silverstars and they proved to be useless within just a few months. Once the weather is warm, I will install the PIAA's.

As far as making the 9005 bulbs fit in the 9006 sockets, I'm pretty sure you just have to shave down the sides of the thing holding the bulb. It might help to search for "9005 conversion."
For light output, the 9005's have a noticeably higher output, but they dont last nearly as long as the 9006's. IMO, the 9006's are bright enough, so the conversion isn't really needed.

Depends on the car.
The 4th gen accord 9006 really suck.
They don't project as well as other cars with 9006.
I am intersted in this 9006 to 9005 conversion.
Thanks for the link.
The only problem I have heard with this is heat.

FWIW, I just spoke with someone in Sylvania's Customer Service and if you send them the burnt out bulb, they will send you a replacement.
According to them, the product is so new the projected life of the Silverstars are still an unknown even though they say it is one year on the web site.
If you still have the receipt, they will even send you a refund.

make sure you dont touch the bulb with your hands, cuz then the oils on your fingers get on the bulb, and that can cause it to go out fairly quickly. but i'd say your better off with HID, thats the route i went.
the 9005 puts out 70% more light than the 9006. do the conversion.
it won't blind oncoming drivers if your headlights are aimed correctly. I've had the conversion for almost 3 years and I'm still on my 2nd set of bulbs. so I can say they bulbs last about a year and a half. so yeah bulb life is shorter than a 9006 would be, but it's not like you blow them every month or anything.
the only reason to use the PIAA bulbs or the silverstars is because you want a specific color of light. Any bulb with a blue coating will put out less light than the same bulb without the coating would. just use whatever bulb the auto parts store has and you'll be fine.

I don't think that'll apply if you did 9005 to 9006 conversion.

I'd have to second that. the product has been altered.

WHOA.
Hold on there a minute kimo sabi.
I will not hear such blasphemy of PIAA bulbs.
Condisering howmany people buy their 9006 and use it for low beam and always bitch about this brand and that brand blowing in a few months and including the silverstars, the PIAA are NO WHERE that bad.
I had my 1st set of PIAA Platnium 9006 for 5 years till 1 of them gave out.
Count them 5 yrs.
I replaced the platnium with their Xtreme white and so far it has been about 8 months and I do expect them to last as long as my Platnium.
So the only reason to go PIAA is not just for the color, it is for durability and quality.
But Yes, considering the shortened lifespan of the halogen when the conversion is done, I will go HID.

OK I just hopped on ebay and did a search. PIAA extreeme white were $57 + $17 for shipping and insurance. total comes to $74 for a pair. This seemed to be about right for what I've seen them go for in the past. maybe you got your's cheaper but I doubt you got them for a LOT less than that. (and if you did
) I think I got 2.5 years out of my stock 9006 bulbs. a pair of whatever 9006 bulbs will cost you like $15, maybe $20 at a parts store. so what if your PIAAS last 5 years, I can buy 3 or 4 pairs of parts store bulbs before I've spent more than you did. and YES, an uncoated parts store bulb will put out more light than any coated bulb on the market running at the same wattage.
9006 bulbs are rated to put out 1100 lumen, 9005 bulbs put out 1900 lumen. even if I buy a set of 9005 bulbs every year and a half, at $20 a pair, I've still only spent $80 over the 5 years your PIAAs lasted, and I've been driving around with CONSIDERABLY MORE LIGHT that whole time.
Of course this comparason is really only valid if you and i use our headlights for a similar number of hours in a year, and turn them on/off a comparable number of times. I've just assumed that you and I both fall in the range of "normal" use.
blue bulbs, no matter whos name is on them, are a cosmetic upgrade only. It's physics, you've just put a set of blue sunglasses on your headlights.

and please don't take this as a flame. I see/hear so many myths repeated on the internet, it just irks me that companies like PIAA blatantly lie to consumers who don't know the facts
