Default performance quiet muffler?

i just bought an 89 hatch with a zc engine. its got a header with 2-1/2" exhaust and a big *** bomb muffler. i want to cut the muffler off, put a smaller performance muffler about where the stock muffler would be, then run a tailpipe out. the goal is to not see the muffler, be somewhat quiet, and still FLOW.

any suggestions?? thanks in advance...

Wow. Reading this made me remember. the back of the june 03 Import Tuner
It is a greddy advertisement, but some valuable information.
the source of this information is "As Tested in Turbo Magazine Dec-02"
Maby this will help

The Data is from "The GReddy 80mm WRX cat-back exhaust system"
but hopefully this helps. I can't imagine that it is much different.

- dB(A)@ idle - dB(A)@3000- Peak HP

Stock - 87 - 86 - 191.8
GReddy - 94 - 92 - 200.9
M2 - 94 - 94 - 195.9
Super Sprint - 95 - 101 - 198.0
MRT Perf. - 96 - 104 - 198.8
HKS -97 - 102 - 202.9
Cobb Tuning - 97 - 103 - 200.0
5 Zigen -98 - 105 - 198.7
Apexi - 100 - 104 - 201.1
Tanabe - 101 - 107 - 197.7
Thermal - 101 - 108 - 198.3
Skunk2 - 102 - 106 - 199.3
Blitz - 104 - 103 - 200.2

There. That is off of a wrx, in june of 03 but that probably isn't much different.

I hope I helped and didn't waste my time and yours

5Zigen, with 2 resonators. Anything is quiet enough with 2 resonators... plus the 5Zigen is pretty small as far as canisters go.

Well the engine will natrually make more noise. but i was pointing out how some are still louder than others and some have a much better hp gain.

i'm running 2.5" piping with a catco hi-flow cat, resonator and a dynomax turbo muffler...looks identical to stock and is painted entirely black....

and it doesn't make a damn sound, no whines no rattles just a deep sound....although i does roar at about 5k+

I don't know how close those numbers will be on a crx.

It says that the greddy was 87 dB at idle... no way, not on my car AND I have a test pipe. My car is closer to 87dB when it's at 5k rpm. I don't think my car EVER reached 200 dB considering if it did I would NOT have been able to run at Laguna Seca.

Laguna (on open lap days) doesn't allow anything over 92 Db (I think). And they measure you as you come down the start/finish so you're at high rpms.

Unless those volumes were measured right at the tailpipe I would only take the figures as a relative comparison.

AFter all, the human voice is something like 65 dB when measured 1 foot from the mouth.

do these really give good power compared to the canister style mufflers? i was thinking about getting one for the stock look, but arnt sure if they produce as much hp/tq as the bigger ones.

carsound is junk , I had the core fall completely apart on mine in less than a year.

now I run a test pipe but if I were to go with another cat it would be a Jegs/Summit hi-flow 2.5" deal.

you read the entire graph wrong guy...

dB(A)@ idle - dB(A)@3000- Peak HP

Stock - 87____________86_______191.8
GReddy - 94____________92_______200.9

the last number is HP on the dyno...
