Looking to rebuild carburetor! Anyone have experience with this??

My overflow fuel line from the carbs drips fuel. I have been told that the float needle (I think that is what my father said) may not be functioning correctly or the carb. is clogged. Anyhow, on ebay there is a kit available to rebuild the carb. Would this kit get my carbs back into good working condition?

I managed to install my GSR motor in my Eg flawlessly with the help of you guys. I'm thinking the carb. rebuild should go just as smooth. Any of you got experience with carburetors? Thanks!

You shouldn't have aproblem with it. Getting out the old screws maybe a problem though if the head are partly stripped but other then that should be easy.
I would look at resettingt he float needle first. Seems like you've got a simple bent/misplaced float resulting in regular overflow. Very simple problem w/ simple, straight forward fix. No need to rebuild just for that imo.

Where do I start?
What must I do / remove to get the carburetors loose from the bike?
Is it a must to drain the gas tank? Do I have to remove the gas tank to remove the carbs?

They were really easy to remove. From what I can see they look pretty clean. But, this is my first time seeing the insides of a carburetor so I could be wrong. Here are some pics I took of them off the bike:
Looking into the carb. from the air filter hose connection:

This is wher the carb. connects to the motor. NO gasket there...

Both carbs. looking in again from the rear side like in the first pic of this post.

This is what unscrewed from the top of the carbs:

How do I dismantle them now? Where would all the "gunk" be if they are clogged?

Buy the rebuild kit. And be thankful somebody even offers parts for that old carb. The float needle and seat move and wear on each other. Other than the slide and floats (which rarely need replacement), those are the only moving parts in the carb.
Pull the float bowl off of the bottom of the carb body. Pull the float pin out, (without cracking one of the two towers that old the float pin). Take out the floats. Unscrew the float seat with your socket, and replace it with the new one. Put the new needle into the seat, put the floats back in, pin back in, float bowl back on, problem fixed.

A friend from down the street was over and took a look at the insides of the carburetors. Said they aren't that bad looking from what he can see. He admited he's not a pro, but doesn't think they need to be rebuilt. He did recommend a good cleaning of the carbs. though.

Your carb is leaking fuel. Your bike is 30 years old. Buy the rebuild kit. Its cheap. And get down on your knees and be grateful that a company even offers replacement junk for your old crap. Unlike your body, your motorcycle will not heal by itself.

When I remove the jets to clean them must they be tightened back the exact way they are now?
If you mean indexed back to 45 degrees, then no they dont. They are just brass bolts with precision holes drilled in them. Oh yeah, and dont over tighten them, the brass is soft. And seriously, if you can find parts for old bikes, you are truely lucky. Motorcycles are not manufactured in anywhere near the numbers cars are, so getting parts can be a huge problem. I mean even for a a bike 5 or 10 years old sometimes you cant get parts through your dealer.
Did you clean the needle and seat? They are under the end of the float were it connects to the carburetor body. If there is gunk between them it will not close properly and will cause the carburetors to overflow. The needle will pull out and the seat can be cleaned with carburetor cleaner on a Q-Tip. Make sure there are not cracks in the seat or it will leak and you need a new one
As far as were the carburetor mount to the cylinder block there isn't suppose to be any gasket there.
Did you clean both jets in both carburetors? The main jet and the idle jet?

That is the cabrator needle that slides in and out of the main jet. The needle and seat is attached to the float it regulates gas flow into the float bowl. The floats push the needle agiast the seat to shut off gas flow to the float bowl. when the level of fual on the float bowl gets low enough the float moves down, moving the needle away front the seat allowing gas to flow into the float bowls refilling them. There is a small pin thaat the float pivots on that removes this allows the floats to be removed attached to the float on the top side as it sits on the carbator will be the needle ( a short 1/4-1/2 inch long with a rubber cone shaped tip with a loop at the bottom that hooks onto the float). The seat sits up on the carbrator in to hole the needle came out of. Clean this area well and check both for wear and cracks.

Here's what I removed to clean:

I sprayed the entire carburetor out really well and cleaned the bowl with the carb cleaner / Q-tips. The small openings are cleaned out as the cleaner sprayed right through the tiny openings. I cleaned the 2 screw things that are in the background making sure all the tiny holes were free of debris.
Went ahead and removed the air filters to see if they needed any attention. What do you know.... To me looked like they haven't been changed in YEARS!!!!


Can these filters be restored? If so, how would I go about doing this? I have compressed air, but I'm thinking it's going to take more than just air. Maybe a cleaner? If I am to buy new ones looks like I have to buy the entire assembly shown since the metal is connected to the filter with that yellow glue stuff.
Also, someone recommended I check the fuel filter which should be located in the fuel cut off switch. Anyone know for sure if the filter is the screen type? If so, I was told it would be better to replace the screen with a lawnmower type filter. Is the screen filter located inside here:

The only thjings I removed were the 2 screws shown above which I believe are the jets. That needle you speak of is it shown in any of my pics?
I also picked up 2 lawn mower in line fuel filters that I will be installing. I'm going to remove the screen filter.

Hey guys. The weather is just now warming up so I'm back at it again. Just took this shot with the pin pulled and floats removed. Sorry it's not that clear >> dark and I am having to hold both while taking the pic. I sprayed what you see down with carb. cleaner. Should I get the air compressor out and send air through all the holes? Thanks again for any help!!
