Wanted: ITR owner to allow me to drive theirs at the Expo
So yeah, it sounds rather far-fetched but I wanted to see if there are any out there who might be interested in allowing me to co-drive their R at the Expo. I'd either be running in Intermediate I or Novice.
My offer is to help pay for the run and maintain on the car for the weekend, including gas, brakes, oil changes, fluids, etc...
I am not sure if he'll remember, but my Instructor was elgorey @ the last Expo (Ran in the Novice there). I drove out with the Philly caravan last year, so I'm hoping some of them see this or can atleast give me some vouches.
Please PM me or reply to let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks in advance guys!

You forgot to mention what compensation you would provide if you wrecked the car you wish to drive OR if some meathead ran into you. I know for certain that I would feel VERY uncomfortable driving someone else's pride and joy no matter how much experience I had driving HPDEs, unless it was owned by a REALLY good friend and even then I would hesitate.

Nah I understand... I'm just kind-of throwing it out there. Basically thats fairly easy to answer for me; I have a commercial automobile insurance policy, which covers any vehicle I am in control of during an accident. (Same as if it were my vehicle.) Papers to back that up, too...
I'm sure its not something that everyone(or anyone) would be willing to do.. But I won't know unless I ask.

In conversations like this, it's very important not to get carried away in the feeling of the moment.
If you allow someone to drive your car on the track, you are basically handing him your entire investment to do with as he will, and no verbal agreement, I think you'll find, is worth it's weight and trouble when it comes to an actual cataclysm.
If you allow someone to drive your car on the track, you really must be fully prepared to lose the entire investment at any time. The ITR Expo is a very well publicised event, and Summit Point is already frequented by insurance company employees who drive their own cars there. You are not going to be able to get away with an insurance claim unless your company specifically, consciously allows high speed driver education events.
I think it's OK to do this kind of thing if you know the person well enough to risk your car, but please be aware that that's exactly what you're doing.

I know its just a car, but I dont even let my best of friends drive my car on regular public roads. Last thing I need is something happening to the car while not in my possession. If something happens and its my fault or in my hands, then so be it. But if something happens at the hands of another person driving my car, Id be pretty pissed and wouldnt want to deal with that.

Honestly,,, And this has nothing to do with you, this is just a general statement.
The only way I would let someone use my car on the track is if they had a cert. check for the replacement value of the car or cash on the spot if something were to happen. The reason I say this is cause I would not want to own the caR after a wreck I did not do. The driver would have to basically buy the car after the incident. Yeah this sounds strange... But since the worst I have done to the car is a smallish scratch on the front bumper. I would be upset to have a car that I have invested 3+ years and tons of money, love and the effort to keep it undamaged to be messed up.
I'm sorry to vent, just understand I was posting this cause I felt it was a feeling that some others might have and would have a hard time explaining.

Guys... I understand where everyone is coming from, and honestly, thats why I posted... to get some opinions in advance. Realistically, I don't expect anyone to even offer, but like I said, "I won't know unless I ask."
As far as insurance goes, I've already looked into that, have what I need for anyone who might be interested; as well as asked Trey a few questions about having multiple drivers for one car.
I appreciate the discussion, as it sheds like to more then just the Expo but the liabiltiies to each person at a "track" based event. Thanks for keeping it somewhat topic based.

Rob, point(s) taken. Best advice to you, just don't let people drive your car.
Like I said, its not for everybody, and no one needs to justify reasons for not considering allowing me to drive. I used to own two R's, I realize what they are, how rare it is to find a unmodified, excellent condition one to replace if something were to happen.

If someone lets you drive their R, I think you should let someone drive your EVO and if something does happen, that person gets to drive the EVO till their R is fixed.

out of curiousity.. how much are you willing to spend on this deal?
I know renting a track car for a weekend can be in the $500 to $1500 range, depending on the car.. and this would basically be the same thing - assuming different run groups..

I think, bud, you'd better do some background investigation into the state of Marc's ITR's mechanicals.

Jorge, that's RealTypeR2 that's possibly offering (Mike) Bone stock - never modified EVER.
Yes, my ITR has had it's problems.
but she still runs..... for now.

That's what I was thinking, EVO as a collateral.

I've been offered the keys to a few ITRs at the past two expos and have refused for this reason. I did damage D's car during an Autocross once (and offered to fix it) but he just let my dent be the pride and joy of the passenger side. It mixes well with the other 1,482 dents on the car.

I did this once. A friend of mine from Chicago was shipping his car to Laguna Seca for NSXPO '99. We split the round trip shipping charges (I paid half of $1700) and he let me drive his car on the track. I think there were several things that made this arrangement work for both of us:
1. We drive at the track together a lot, and he knows how safe a driver I am. Which is, EXTREMELY safe. (Not just in terms of events, but in terms of courtesy, how far I push the car's limits, how many times I've gone off the track, etc.)
2. We are friends, and he knows that I will come through with my side of the deal.
3. We didn't have a formal written arrangement or contract, but we DID decide who pays for what in the event of a crash or a mechanical failure. (Had we not been friends, a written agreement would have been de rigeur.)
4. He was already going to be paying quite a sum to ship the car, so splitting it was very helpful to him.
HTH
I've crunched up a friends car with an off track excursion. Wasn't pushing it or anything but **** happens. I did pay for the damages in full and it's wasn't too big of a deal.
Personally, if a friend asked me to drive my car, I'd let them. On track or not. Yes, I've put a good amount of money into my shitbox but in the end, it's still just a car. As long as the person driving understood and took responsiblity for whatever happens on track, I couldn't give two ***** if he wrecked it. Hell, I'd be far more worried about his/her health if a wreck did occur before even thinking about the car.
But with that said, I really doubt I'd drive another persons car on track again. Too damned expensive (especially those damned Volk wheels).

how about renting a race car from someone who has a Type R that they have built for racing. That might be easier. Chances are that person would have rented out their car before so they may already have everything in place for making the rental easier.

I remember. Sneaky is a good driver and a great student. In fact I was very impressed with his skills as a novice.
As far as someone letting you drive their caR, thats a pretty big leap of faith they would put in you. It would be easiest if you could ask someone you are friends with.
Kind of like how Im going to rag the **** out of .RJ's aRRR on track this year
(j/k)
anyway, if anyone is willing to share a car, Sneaky is certainly skilled and safe enough to be trusted with one.
One thing to consider, although it is expensive, you could get the car insured for racing. Usually around $500 to cover the car for the weekend, and around a $5000 deductible. Maybe you could talk down the insurance company since its an instructed HPDE, the liability is certainly less than racing.
Or another option is paying a rental fee to the driver.
PS- while we are on the subject, can I drive your EVO at summit?
I have plenty of AWD experience!
