I have a spare Si cluster and I took it apart to try and roll back the odometer to the correct mileage my car has since the one in it reads a lot higher. I can't figure out how to take the rest of the odometer apart so I can roll it back without breaking it. Anyone know?

Why would anyone flame it?

 

Open up the cluster. Get a small screwdriver and push/turn on the numbers. Did it to mine to advance the mileage....

 

I tried pushing the numbers with my fingers and they seemed locked in. Isn't pressing them with a screwdriver going to scratch them all up?

i think the key here is that he doesnt know how to open up the cluster..

Because they're gonna tell you that it's against the law, blah blah blah....

once you get the cluster apart...get the odemeter apart..so you can pull the numbers apart..kind of spreading them while you turn..

 

It's not against the law if you get a new cluster and correct it to your current millage. They accaully want you to do it. So you can keep track of your real miles.

 

I have the cluster apart down to the seperate odometer part. I have most of that apart minus the gear system which is like locked in. I know if you take that needle off you **** it up so I'm not touching that.

As for being illegal showing your proper mileage is not illegal. I'm not some used car salesman who is going to roll it back 20,000 miles and rip off someone. This is my own car which I am never selling anyway.

 

I can see on the shaft with the numbers on it is a retaining ring. I bet if I can get that out I can slide it to whatever I want. Too bad it seems near impossible to get off since its so small.

 

put the car on jackstands, put it in reverse, and put a brick on the gas pedal

 

I didn't think mileage mattered on a car over 10years.....I know when I got both of my hatches taged I offered it to the clerk and she said car was too old and not needed, maybe that just in TN dunno

do not take off the needle like it says.. its very hard to do and 9 times out of ten it breaks then ur cluster is toast..
pop that little retaining clip off.. then u can spread them out and move them.. its not hard if u have really small needle nose to get it back on.. i've don't it a few times

I wonder whatz the point if your not going to sell the car? i personally like to say hey my car might be 13 years old and have 290,000 miles on it but it still looks better and out runs your 4 year old car

 

I put the cluster back together for now. No needle nose pliars look like they will do anything to get off that ring. I'll wait until this weekend when I get paid and go buy some Craftsman retaining ring pliers and give those a try.

And the point is I want to know the accurate mileage on my car without having to go find a book with what the difference is and do math anytime I want to know my miles. Math sucks.

I agree, what I did with mine when I got it, my car had 196k so I just used a drill to get it to 200k then I just knew from then on. Id do that if I were you bc you dont really "know" how many miles your motor has (assuming this is for your ZC), so just roll it forward to a point thats easy to subtract.

geez........ i have to answer this one also??

take and open the cluster... remove the speedo gauge by removing the 4 big shinny chrome bolts from behind cluster
once out, u nneed to remove the needle with a fork
remove the black face
if u look behind the cluster where the gears are. on the left side u will see this little C clip... remove with a tiny screwdriver...(be careful , if it falls is a bitch to find)
move all the gears to the left... then move the first one on the right to the right, and rotate to desired number, then move the second and rotatte, and so on
once all numbers are done, put the C clip back on with some needle nose pliers
installation is reversal of removal....

 

or u can just swap odometers. . like 2-3 screws and it comes right out that is what i did

 

can you just advance it so far that it starts again at zero?
