Default Painting my eg flat black...questions

Does anyone remember an issue of Sport Compact car when they spray painted a 240sx flat black. Well, I am planning on doing this to my hatchback soon. What kind of prep work should I do before painting with spray cans? I saw a big post somewhere else on this forum about painting, but Im wondering if I could cut some corners because I would be using flat black primer. Let me know what you think.

try the appearance forum you might have better luck there. Buy why would you want to spray paint your car??? I have not seen the 240sx that you mentioned on SCC but I can't imagine it would look good and even lasting

to be cool??? I am doing it because I don't like the unneeded attention....from anyone. I don't build my car to be "cool" I just build it to be fast and have a maintenance free paintjob....

if i was you,..i wouldnt just use flat black primer,..i would use flat black primer and flat black paint,..primer absorbs water like a sponge and would therefore lead to rusting real quick

i think it would look good if it was prepped good and profesionally sprayed. I wouldnt rattle can it though.is there any kind of a dull clearcoat you could use to protect it , because the elements would eat your **** up otherwise.good luck.lets see some pics when its done.

Actually it's not just primer....I remember that article and it was a flat black paint that they used, in fact I believe it was just cheapo Krylon flat black. But I do agree with everyone else, if you are going to do it definetly use paint not just primer

That 240sx is crazy looking not really sure how it would look on a hatchback. Is it cost-effective?

if you really want to know how to correctly paint a car flat black
just ask an old musclecar junkie
it usewd to be considered "cool" to have you rod painted flat black
if i remember correctly my grandfather used to have a mercury hot rod painted flat black i will ask him how he did it

I bought a red eg that had oxidized paint and needed a complete overhaul... interior was trashed, looked as if the whole car had been submerged...

Anyway, since I am temporarily living in Hawaii where it rains all the time and the humidity is high (along with the red dirt out here that stains anything...)

I decided to make painting my car a priority for when I got back to the mainland... so for the last 4 months, I have been rolling my car around ppg haze grey primer....

It really doesn't look bad to me at all and others at the track have complemented on it... (don't know why, it's ******* primer!! ) At any rate, very low maintenance and it allowed me the spare cash to do a Ls swap and put a turbo on along with full suspension... also did interior too...

You can do it the cheap way with primer then flat black spray paint or there is a way that professionals use that involves an actual normal paint being used then an acid wash style layer going on to eat away the top layer and giving it the flat look. Just do it the cheap way, it is hard to tell the difference.

BTW I really like the flat black look, but I am a fan of black in general.

I would just go to napa and have them mix a gallon of
cheap matte black. Spray it with a gun.

btw, by using a gun, the spray pattern is much larger
than a spray can. Thus, the painted panels will not have
the "tiger stripe" effect.

If you read the article, they mentioned spray painting it
really quick, panel by panel, before the underlying layer
of paint dried.

Masking tape and newspaper are your best friends.
