Default My homemade sub box..... is it working right?????? theres a pic up!

sorry about the size of the pic... ok they are 1600 watts max ea, and 800 rms ea. I got a amp boss pd2000 and the subs can go down to 1 ohm and thats what they are wired at and my amp pushes 2x700 rms @ 1 ohm. But they dont sound as loud as they could be... Now i dont really know what the issue is, could it be the box? The inverted sub it is working to its full potential. I would think so since one side of the cone is still sealed. Any input would help, tai! Shaun Clark

Sounds like a phase issue...

The cones on each sub need to be moving in the same direction relative to the enclosure - not the frame of the sub.

Check to see that the wiring for the inverted sub is opposite to that on the other sub....

It's a little hard to explain, but you should draw a little wiring diagram and post it, then we could tell you how to get it working properly...

That does not matter - if the two subs are playing out of phase, you can have cancellation issues....try it the other way and see if that changes things...

Im wondering if there would still be some slight cancellation issues since one is hitting "up and down" and the other is hitting "left and right"

If I were you I would put them both facing the same way. Maybe they won't look as cool, but at least they will sound thier best.

seriously, i never understood mounting subs reverse and then reversing the phasing.

What didn't you understand about it? Not making fun of you, just asking so we could discuss it for everyone to read...

so one sub is pushing air and the other is pulling (cuz one is reversed) even though in different chambers it can still distort or ruin the sound? and swithcing the polarity... will that fix it or ruin my sub?

Depends on how you wired it....

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> even though in different chambers it can still distort or ruin the sound?</TD></TR></TABLE>

Think about it, two identical sine waves, only one is 180 degrees out of phase with the other (sorry for taking you back to trig class). Add them up, what do you get - a big fat ZERO!! Try swapping them out and see if that's it, it could be a lot of other factors, but that's a start.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> and swithcing the polarity... will that fix it or ruin my sub?</TD></TR></TABLE>

I wouldn't tell you to do something if it would ruin your sub But I suggest you write down how they are hooked up now, then we can tell you how to fix the problem. I don't want you to go switching wires around, get something mixed up (it happens to all of us) and then be bummed if something is not right....so post up a wiring diagram!

This has nothing to do with air. This only deals with sound waves. I don't remember the physics exactly but if two waves collide they cancel out thus producing a smaller quieter sound. I would switch the + and - of one sub to see if you get better output or even mount the one sub with the basket inside the box.

the sub wont fit in the other way but this is how each sub is wired

If they are wired in a stereo load, just flip the positive and negative wires for each other at the amplifier, then give it a listen...

besides it looking cool, their is no increased sound quality from mounting them backwards correct? i do admit it almost looks cool, but then again so does the gigantic donut surround on a W7. To me the speaker was designed to work pushing with the correct polarity, and their is nothing wrong with reversing it, but the cone is designed to move air one way, so why not take advantage of it. Maybe its just that i am old school, and was trying to buy a 72 riviera, aka boat, for the longest time. rrcurley is correct as usual though, flip the polarity on the sub thats mounted reverse, so you get the same wave.

Many people swear by flipping the subs around for better bass. They do perform the same either direction (polarity adjusted accordingly, of course), as moving air is moving air. I think the difference most people hear (and like) is accounted for by the slight increase in box volume not being taken up by the displacement of the sub, as well as the marginal volume gain from the space immediately in front of the cone (minimal, but existant). Larger box, more boom. Personally, I prefer the carefully calibrated box.

Remember, a sub cone is a simple piston with relatively the same area on both sides.

It's meant to oscillate across it's resting point in BOTH directions. Remember, sub doesn't care what polarity you send to it, it's a mechanical device that simply turns whatever signal it sees into cone movement!

the only disadvantage ( inverted sub) Ive ever heard of is motor noise.

some people play their tunes a bit too loud, or whatever,.

When the structure is inside the box you don't hear it as much ( until the voice coil is being pummeled against the back of the magent )...

Other than that, they should be close enough (db wise) that they should sound the same.

If they are chromed out and tweaky looking, it do3es look rather cool, imo.
