Default hondata and AEM CAI???

Just curious if i would see i big difference in my car if i added those 2 things as my first mods to my stock 02si.

If you have any suggestions on what a better mod would be let me know. my funds are a little limited right now.

I don't know alot about Civics in general, but I think Hondata and an AEM CAI would be good starting grounds.

0-60 time should improve by a second or
so (you no longer need 3rd gear to hit 60).
More info on hondata.com, including a dyno.
Not really a major hp/tq boost, but gives you
a wider power band (more useable power) and
the extra 900 revs leave most people very
satisfied.

you missed the hondata gropbuy. hondata reflash will cost you 500 or so. AEM, good low end. with hondata, you'll be able to adjust and control a/f ratios, rev limit, vtec crossover etc. you'll be able to stick a smooth, a little higher powerband.

Does anyone have any complaints about the sound level of the CAI?? I am sure it will add more noise, but is it real noticable?

lol. Haven't been pulled over yet (AEM CAI for the last 5K miles).
You'll definitely hear more engine noise both inside/outside the cabin,
but I wouldn't say it "unbearable" in the least sense.

more engine is good though. i don't like my car being as quiet as it is, but i also don't want to be driven insane on the long highway drives i have.

Also, can you hear VTEC better with CAI?

Engine noise isn't bad on the highway at all. If you have an exhaust, that
might be a different matter.

The Si doesn't have "true" VTEC, in the sense that it doesn't switch to higher
lobes at a high RPM, a la the RSX-S. Our VTEC switchover occurs at 2.2K RPM
(IIRC) and honestly, I don't really listen for it, let alone notice it.

nah i don't have exhaust and don't plan on it for a while. i didn't know that we didn't have a true VTEC switch-over. what exactly happens at 2200RPM? Is it just a real mild switch over?>

if you get the hondata ecu thing, can you install it yourself? or do you need to go to a "professional" installer? and another thing... about the vtec, yea its true the vtec in our cars (ep3) are different. i just installed my v2 and i can hear a sound change at 2.2k rpm and when it gets to about 5k i hear another slight change (most noticable in 1st and 2nd gears). and with our cars we can go all the way up to redline without excess noise from the intake if you hold onto the gas only slightly. but if you full throttle all the way up.. then your engine will roar.

(and i know my v2 isnt in the cold air design.. but i was being general about the intake stuff)

I'm not an expert, but under 2200ish rpms, we effectively have a 12-valve
engine and then it switches lobes and opens up all 16. There's lots of info on
this, if you do a search for "i-VTEC" you might find it. You might have to go
back a while, too.

You buy the reflash from a Hondata dealer. You take your ECU out, box it up and
ship it to Hondata. They reflash it, ship it back to your dealer/you. Removing
and reinstalling takes about 15mins.

How safe is the hondata reflash? Has anyone had problems by having a 900rpm higher redline with stock valve springs?

People have gotten away with hondata#4 with stock springs, although it is recommended that you upgrade them.

how long does it take them to get you your ECU back? isn't that a lot of down time while they reflash your ECU?

Not a bad choice, hopefully you got it used/cheap.

You overnight it to them, they flash it the same day then send it back via
overnight mail. Total downtime - 2-3 days. Check out hondata.com or talk
with a vendor that sells Hondata (I'd suggest wiredspeed.com myself ).

It seems safe. Several users on ephatch.com have had it for 20K+ miles with
no apparent problems. I've only heard of one horror story where the guy
messed up his engine (although Honda said it was reving at 8000+ RPM and
fuel cut for Hondata is 7700), but Honda actually covered most of the cost
(interesting that they didn't recognize the flash was on it) for a similar bulletin
on the Si and S2000, or something.
A new valve train is probably a fairly smart idea, but it seems like most people
aren't having problems. Hondata's website has some of this info in their FAQ.

That is the RSX-S reflash where you go up to 8700RPM, or something like
that? I dunno, but the Si reflash is only to 7700RPM and Hondata doesn't
recommend an upgrade of the valve springs. Not sure what they do/don't
recommend on the RSX.

after going to dyno day recently i would have to tell you to save you money when it comes to hondata untill after you get intake, header, and catback exhaust. it is a good mod but the money would be better spent elsewhere unless you have the above mentioned mods. how much money for hondata?
