Type of fuel you guys use?
Well i was looking through my owners manual for my 03' f4i. It said that I can use 86 octane and that is what they prefer. It said if i used any king of premium that it could eventually burn out my cat. So I was curious on what kind of you fuel you guys use for how long and on what bike. Thanks
Paul,
Put 91 or higher in it. It will run smoother, cooler and and there will be no chance of knocking. 11,000 miles on 91 octane.
P/S congrats on your new bike

87 or 89 octane is fine. i recommend 89 if you live in a hot area just because it's a little safer. there is no need for 91, you are just spending more money for less horsepower if you are using 91 octane.
Cool. thats what i thought. I figured it woudnt hurt. Thats what I am running on now so I think I'll keep it for another bazillion miles. Now to change this topic around how about oil. I live in az and it can be stupid hot here. I was thinking best oil to run on would be 20W-50. I need to change my oil at my 600 mile tune up and want to get a good idea of what everyone else uses yet again and compare. thanks

I got an '01 F4i, been using 93 since I'ved owned it . . . I don't trust regular fuel in an engine that revs to 14,5RPMs. Detonation always lingers very near with that mixture . . . On the weekends, I'll use 100 or even 110 . . . I also use 10w40 . . .
Too high of an octane = paying for a decrease in performance.
Most cars have engines designed with fuel economy in mind, whereas
bike engines are made to extract the maximum amound of HP from
gasoline. What you know as 'right' about compression ratios vs octane
does not apply to your bike the same way it does to your car.

We discussed this a while back and you don't need to run premium, most bikes don't even need medium. Falcon explained it and it had to do with the motor being so small or something like that. You don't have to waste you money on more expensive gas, do what your manual says...or if you don't mind spending the extra money then by all means go ahead and get premium.
i run 91 octance ( 91 is the hightest in most places here in CO)
i have ran it in my 01 f4i since i got it. i have 3400 miles on it and no problems.
i run 91 cuz i have k&n, full exhaust, and pc3 i figure for an extra 1-2$ a tank its worth it for piece of mind

It doesn’t matter as long as you don't get engine knock for it and it is the minimum they say to use. Even with a pipe and jetting, they do not effect the engine compression; so higher octane is not needed.
I run 93 octane in my bike but the compression changes when on boost by quite a bit. And I still don’t get any detonation running 14Psi of boost. So do you honestly think a stock compression motor needs it? Not me. The only benifit you may get is some of the higher octane gases contain better cleaners.

I run 91 only because I've tried both 87 and 89 when I first got the bike and it was very jumpy and sluggish. 91 octane seems to run smoother in my particular bike. I don't mind the lost horsepower either, hell I only use about 30% of the bike's power on any given day.
street- 89 (tell me otherwise with big words)
track- 96 (toulene)
street oil-15w-50 mobil 1 red cap
track oil-20w-50 amsoil synthetic
If 93 pump makes you happy, then great. If 87 pump and $1.20 a tank makes you happy then great. What makes your bike happy is another story. If it's US market stock then its more than likely 86/87. Course this is what owner's manuals are for... and that thing called reading they teach in grade school. Go figure
