Hey guys, I'm new here and this summer Im planning on putting a GSR engine into my 1990 crx DX. I really want to make it CA BAR approved. I know to make it BAR approved in CA, it has to be newer than the car and have all the smog equipment and all that, but can I get say, a 96+ (obd2) engine and install/wire it like a 94-95 obd1? or do i have to wire the newer ones up in obd2 to pass? Any help is greatly appreciated.

got any idea how hard that'll be to make it all obd2?
i might be getting a really good deal on a gsr motor with tranny and skunk2 manifold and a bunch of stuff.. and also: time isnt really an issue. I have till the end of summer ('04) to finish it, and plan on doing it all myself. i just REALLY want to be legal.

well it depends if its jdm or usdm first off and because that will change which parts you will need to buy........and ur wrong on the its gotta stay obd2. you should get a obd1 swap or change everything to obd1 because there are less parts you are missing because the obd2 cars have alot of other sensors that the obd1s have.........i had a obd0 b16a and swapped everything obd1 so i can get my Bar sticker and they didn't say a word except for the parts i was missing.

it's a 97 usdm b18c1 ... i just need to be positive before i start doing anything so I dont have to start all over on wiring and all that if it turns out it has to be obd2..
by the way... i see you're from San Diego. where did you get it ref'd and any good/bad things to say about the station you went to?

the same guys i learned work at both stations but i just went to the statino in SWC down in bonita. you can go with me if you want when i go back to get my bar sticker and talk to them yourself they are very informative my other friend that went with me got a couple wiring diagrams from them, they are very helpful and friendly. i think if you switch everything obd1 they won't be able to tell because when i switched everything to obd1 they didn't say a word. and switching to obd1 in a crx there are alot more parts missing and obd1 or obd2 will pass in a crx. you can talk to my friend that did all my wiring on my car he has a crx si with a b18c that he is going to take to the ref soon. i will ask him what he things about a 97 gsr in a crx and see if he says obd1 or obd2. i will keep you posted

Go to the Referee yourself!!
Ask if due to the fact that a 97 B18C basic engine is the same as a 95, is it OK to run OBD1 as configured for a 95. Tell him that the reason you want to do this is because you have only the long block and it would cost less money to run the OBD1 configuration.
Keep in mind that the regulations are "guidelines" and it's up to that specific Referee to view them as they like. One may not have a problem with it, another may!!!
