Dude, I'm sorry to say it, but that is probably a bad question to ask in this forum.
Everyone is going to tell you to get an old, beater bike to learn on. They are also going to tell you to get gear, and take a motorcycle safety course.
Everything mentioned above IS the right thing to do, but I'm sure that's not the response you were looking for.
So just to make you feel better, I'd look into a turbocharged hayabusa. Great first bike.

Meh, you probably need to spend 1500-2000 on gear, that lowers your price range to 4000-5500.
I would say look for a good deal on a 2001 F4i, it's fuel injected so you don't have to worry about a carburetor.

I am spending about that, but I am buying racing gear. I would say about 1k for good gear and 500 for just gear. Something is always better than nothing.

I spent:
helmet - $400
gloves - $100
boots - $180
leather jacket - $300
leather pants - $200
That's almost $1200. Did it hurt my wallet? Hell yeah! But, $1200 is still less expensive than a skin graft.
I think it's absolutely necessary to have all the proper gear, but you need to get gear that suits your riding style. If you're canyon strafing and doing track days, then you need full leathers (1 or 2 piece). Just commuting, then you'll probably be ok with just a textile suit or Aerostitch Roadcrafter/Darien suit.

anyways, on the the question. I think you should get an f3, f4, f4i, gixxer600, r6, etc... Get whatever u can afford. You'll be good on any bike basically but it all really depends on how much you can respect the bike and how much you care if you drop it. I think the f4i is a great bike. Not too expensive, lots of parts on ebay, plenty of power, and its a honda
But then again i may be biase since i have one

I'm a firm believer in wearing full leathers for any sort of spirited riding or anything at freeway speeds. The carbon stuff is not necessarily the best gloves available. On impact, the carbon can shatter, sending carbon splinters into the hand. I like these gloves (http://www.leeparksdesign.com/). For commuting I use textile stuff with armor. Good textile stuff can be a couple hundred. The choice in gear is his to make, but we're just throwing in our opinions.
As for 00EBPsi's question: Your best bet is an older bike (broken record, repeating over...and over...and over...) that is reliable and cheap to insure. Honda F3s are decently fast and have lots of spares available for when you drop it.

I'm going to buy a 600+ dollar 1 piece leather suit when I buy my CBR.
Maybe it's just me, but I'd much rather wear the right equipment and get off with a couple bruises than have my legs torn up because I wore jeans.
I've fallen going down a street at 20mph on rollerblades with jeans on, and believe me, it protects nothing. I still have scars.

You may wish to rethink the 1 piece if you're going to do a good deal of street riding. 2 piece suits are much more practical. 1 piece is pretty much dedicated to tracktime. It's good everybody recognizes the need for protection though. I don't know about going as budget as 10 seconds but you don't need to spend 1k if you're just starting out and only street riding. A good fitting helmet is the most important piece of the puzzle. Too cheap and you'll hate wearing it. Too big or small and you won't wear it. Gloves are essential, think about what your natural instinct is when you trip. A decent jacket is the core of a set of street gear. Ankle and toe protecting boots are the last piece of the most basic street gear. The topic of pants is arguable so I won't touch on that. Anything not covering your skin is asking for trouble though. Put it this way, shorts and a tee will mess you up. A full 1 piece racing set will have you walking away 98% of the time. The rest is somewhere in between. The choice is yours
I bought my 98 civic for 3500 from the auction with a 99 Si front end and doors and connected the power and everything, and I'm trading it for a 2000 Si in perfect condition, he doesn't like coupes and he doesn't want to deal with selling it, He traded his 92 hatch with a swap.
Going to sell the Si for 11,000 to get a bike and a beater.
and I'm only 16.

When I turned 16, I had over 20,000 in my bank account... And I made this money myself, parents were not involved.
Now if only I could answer the question of where the hell that money went?
(oh yeah, check my sig at the bottom, I think that's a good start.)

Hey man im going on 18 in about a month and just got a cbr 6. They are awsome bikes for begginers and has more than enough power that you will need for a pretty long time. I spent around a $900 on my gear . Gloves..$70, Jacket..$300, Helmet..$400,and other **** that comes with it like a good pair of shoes and pants. If you have around 7k to spare go check out some used bikes or even a new f4i. I know i got a sick deal on mine because they just wanna get rid of them now that all of the 04's are out.
