Got a smog check today and fail'd. How the **** do you fail smog with only I/H/E. I have had friends with pistons/cams get closer to passing than this.

I have a AEM CIA, DC 4-1 (usdm) headers & RSR Exhaust

The RSR exhaust is for a LS but i had the b-pipe extended 2 inch's to make it fix. I dont see why that would be the problem since the car is way quite and the b-pipe and muffler were the same size as my tanabe g-mediallion (which was a POS by the way).

Any way here are my numbers.

I pass on that one.... I'm dont really understand the hole smog priciple but should i fail on both?

Also the spark plugs that are in my car have 20K miles on them and are OEM plugs(the idiot before me bought them) Could this be the problem

I also have the VAFC but it's set to %0 correction. What is the Low and High setting for (right now there set at low =10% high=50%)

i need this car to pass the next time. Anybody know whats wrong?

 

was the cat originally 2 inches closer to the head (as the header flows), unless I am reading what you wrote wrong, your cat is now 2 inches farter down the exhaust stream that previously, maybe, it is taking longer for it to light up, this may be why you passed the second test and not the first, the cat lit up durring, or while prepping for the second test.

You failed because of your exhaust dude...that stuff isn' t legal...esp. the RSR...put the exhaust back to stock!!

 

maybe your car wasnt hot enough when you tested it man... that would explain why the second test failed... make sure its really ****** hot before you test...

i have to go in 2 months with my setup... its about a 6 grand NA project with a wild mugen chipped rich *** ecu... should be fun.

you can always put in a civic DX ecu from like 94 I've heard... is your car odb I?

 

the cat is in the same place. the b-pipe on the exhaust was made longer.

As for the RSR exhaust. I dont think thats the sole cause of this problem. One of my friends with a RSR exhaust thats 3 years old came very close to passing with ls/vtec, itr pistons, ctr cams, fpr, vafc, headers, etc.

the car was hot enought. Not only did i have to drive it their (about 10 min drive) it was left idling for 10 minutes then he ran the 15 MPH test and it didnt look good so he let idle for another 5 min and ran it again. The car was hot.

I know their is sombody technical on this board who know's this stuff. Where you at

I passed in NJ with I/H/E. AEM cai, dc header and rsr exhaust. I don't know why you would have a problem.

check your O2 sensor and/or catalytic converter

One thing i forgot to mention is i have magnicore wires... Now i've heard alot of bad things about these wires and i'm wondering if i should get ride of them. Also how would i check my o2 sensor. I'm not getting a MIL.

If i were to get plugs and wires what plugs and wires should i get.

 

system GSR, heres what i have so far.

It could be an EGR valve which causes the majority of the problems. IT could also be a "lazy" o2 sensor. meaning that it doesnt test the mox fast enough. lastly it might be a cat but probaly not.

the exhaust system only affects the flow rate, which in the ammounts that it changes the flow rates, isn't enough to make you fail.

and considering he is failing on HC, and CO, it leads one to believe that his car is running rich, or the fuel isn't being entirely burned.

this could be the plug wires, this could be a bad O2 sensor, this could be a bad cat (not breaking down the HC and CO into H2O and CO2), or it could be the fuel system. but it will not be his cat back exhaust system.

I would recomend going back to the stock plug wires, find a no pass no pay (if you have one around you) and keep trying till you get it right.

 

Somthing just came to my mind. My car every once and a while latly has been acting weird. for instance i plush the gas and hold it in one position while going and the car acts like it died but then it kinda jerks and then goes. i think it's boging. i really think it's the plugs or wires (expecaiily about all the bad **** i hear about magnicore) i'm gonna change these and see how it runs

The exhaust system has nothing to do with passing smog. RS*R exhaust is CARB legal anyways.. but he failed the sniffer not visual.

I do not think 10mins is long enough to heat the cat up. Drive around for a half hour...wind out a bunch of gears. Put the car under load. THEN take it and smog it.

Try putting back the stock intake with the OEM filter you will pass.

 

I'd say you're running rich too. Since you have a VAFC, lean it out a bit.

 

my guess is your running rich also.. maybe use the cleaner burning gas? i duno....
