Default Running 2 chips in an ecu

Hey there everybody. I posted this in the eg forum also but thought I might get some other peoples ideas form this one as well. Had a thought today on rechiping an ecu and wanted some input. Is there any way to run both an aftermarket chip and the stock chip at the same time. Not both chips running at the same time but a set up where you could switch between the stock and aftermarket chips at the push of a button? Don't know if this has been done before or is possiable but just wanted to get some ideas thrown around.

Cheers,
Dan

install a switch on j1, I believe.

it can't be that simple, you mean to tell me ONE jumper controls whether the ecu loads the program from internal or external rom!

yes, if the ecu is chipped and didnt come with an external rom from the factory, all one needs to do is intall a switch or jumper on j1 and you can switch between the external rom and the stock program.

http://www.pgmfi.org you need at least a 27C512 so you can swtich banks, look on that site for more info
edit: thats if you want to have 2 different programs on 1 chip, for swtiching back and forth yes you can do it, dont do it with the car on

this method will allow for 3 maps with 2 switches. (2 in the chip, 1 stock)

You can actuctally do a lot of maps, if you can do some simple logic circuit design

I think this is a little more in depth than the orgional poster was thinking

Yes, a switch on J1 will allow you to switch between the stock ecu, and the chip

this set up would be pretty bad for emmisions

BTW, phiz take a break man, I know you have been having trouble with fbsd, but it can't be that bad

This is not more than I was thinking. This is just what I wanted. I think it would be possiable to do this. Emissions is not a factor in this I just want to find creative way that this could be done. I want talk about jumpers and such. I have a good backround in electronics and I know this can be done.

This is what I want. I want to talk about having two chips and switching them with a push button or DPST switch or any other kind of switch. I want ideas on running 2 chips with me controling which one runs from the touch of a button. SOHCwarrior is talking about the things I wanna discuss

Cheers,
Dan

Sine the rom images are 256 kilobits (32kbytes) people use a 2xC512 (512kbit/64kbyte) chip and they stuff 2 roms in there, one at offset 00h and one 8000h. Then you take the high adress bit pin, and ground it, and have it connected to ... say vcc, via a switch

with switch off you get addresses in the form:
x0xx xxxx xxxx xxxx: starting at offset 00h

With switch on you get addresses in the form:
x1xx xxxx xxxx xxxx: starting at offset 8000h

Yup its possible as stated by the guys above. You can do the J1 switch thing, or run the 27C512K chip with a switch...

I've come across a website where this guy sells daughterboards that can take in up to 4 aftermarket chips that plugs in to the ECU. I guess these boards have switches for selecting the programs. They aint too popular I guess...but its a really clever idea.

You will have to rig the ECU itself with an additional resistor so you can switch programs on the fly (while you're running). If not you have to turn of the ignition, switch programs, and start the car again (this is the case with the J1 switch).

Hope this helps
