Winter O/T fun: pick any 5 cars you wish you could try on a track day...
OK, things are slow this winter, it's -40 outside here (on Mars it was -11 today, no joke), I'm dreaming of spring and driving on the track again, so here's a little Top 5 fun (I just watched Hig Fidelity this week, top 5 was a recurring theme). If you ever read British mags like Evo, you'll notice that they have these track days where you get to do a few laps in 4 or 5 different cars, like Diablos, 911's, Maseratis, etc. If you had to pick your dream list from production cars past and present to drive on a closed circuit for a few laps each all in one day (a sunny day, we'll presume), which five cars would you choose? Here's my list, for now, in no particular order:
A bike-engned Caterham 7 (like the Blackbird)
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 7 RS Sprint
Ferrari F40
Lancia Stratos
The new ITR (RSX)

Any one of these would be awsome:
1. Ferrari F360 N-GT
2. Zonda C-12
3. 1985 Ferrari 288gto (it's old, but I love it)
4. Nissan R-34 GT-R Spec-V II
5. Subaru Impreza B22 WRC

Man, you guys have big appetites. My tastes would be a bit simpler and maybe less likely to cause trouble in.
A Z06
A Lotus Elise or Exige
About any decent Trans Am car
A sports racer of some sort, not underpowered please
A formula car of similar description
With ample supply of fuel and fresh rubber of course.

come on guys; he said ANY car!!!!
the new "super cars" are great; awesome, i am sure, but if i am doing the dreaming, i am gonna dream about driving something really special on track; once in a lifetime stuff....
how about an AutoUnion 16 cylinder Type C circa 1936???
talk about a ballsy car!!! that would be the drive of a lifetime!!!
as alternates, I'd consider:
Mercedes Benz W154
any Alfa Grand Prix car of the era
those were cars that were DRIVEN. they were super super fast (over 200 mph runs made on the 'Bahn; i seem to remember they could reach over 230+ in later iterations?). and no extraneous "helpful" devices such as ABS, traction control, autoshifting, etc. etc. you drive it right and it performs. you make mistakes and it kills you. i'd give my right arm to drive one.....
and the sounds from the motors! the sounds!
todd
PS. i have a vintage Super Seven that i race. great, awesome car to drive on track. i'd trade it straight up for a weekend of driving the AutoUnion at Watkins Glen!!!!!!

I'm gonna have to go with:

Jim Hall's Chaparral (I believe it was 1966?)
Screw it, let's say almost any of the vintage Can-am cars.

Laff!

Well, I was originally thinking of production cars, but I guess it's clear we would all want to try race cars, so I'll give my list of race cars:
BTCC Renault Laguna
Panoz Esperante GTR-1
Ford Falcon V8 Supercar
current WRX WRC car
Trans-Am Audi 5000
From now on, I expect 2 lists, one of production cars, one of racing cars

well, if it's any car now, bump the jgtc car off the bottom of my list, and put a recent Ferrari F1 car at the top! Matter of fact, you can just remove the other cars, and fill all five spots with the F1 car.

- any LMP car
- any Porsche Cup car
- Peugeot 206 WRC (tarmac setup) Great suggestion, SPiFF-man!
- SWC GT class prepped BMW
- FIA touringclass prepped Alpha Romeo
Ask me tomorrow and I'd probably have 5 different cars....

- Honda NSX-R
- Porsche GT3
- BMW Euro-spec E36 M3
- Nissan R34 GT-R V-Spec 2

My Integra with a fully built IT race motor and nothing busted on it
Viper Competition Coupe
Any Ferrari 360 hardtop
Z06
I kept the list well grounded because I don't think I have the skill to do anything in an F1 car beyond stalling it and/or peeing my pants.

Karl, you kill me!
ya, i'd probably crash in a huge ball of flame the first time i "opened her up" in the AutoUnion. hopefully, i'd be scared shi#$%^& enough to really respect the car the first time out....
as for F1 cars, i know i don't have the skills or training to even get one out of the pits, much less enjoy it on a track... never will, i'd imagine!
