I think you have already done the Piece Of The **** mod. I would check your car again, I bet the last owner did it for you.

From some Ford Escort website:
What it basically come down to, is that youre tricking the car into thinking that its colder. If youve noticed how your car runs when you first start it, thats somewhat like how it would run with pots. IAT is intake air temp sensor and ECT is the engine coolant temp sensor. By placing potentionmeters, or variable resistors, you can fool the sensors into thinking that everything is colder. When this happens, the computer adjusts the air/fuel ratio and some say it advances timing but im not sure about that. This is kind of a simplified ecplanation but im sure you get the idea. Overall, its more of a temporary mod, not something you can have on all the time. There are many differnt ways you can do the mod but beware if you do it, it will void your warranty if you have one. I feel that you will be better off just getting a low temp thermo and a chip. I think they would basically do the same thing. It may cost more money but it wont void your warranty, it will be safe, it will always be on, and will probably give you better gains, especially if youre an ATX.
Basically, you apply resistance to the IAT circuit and it makes your car dump in more fuel to compensate for the greater air molecule/cubic meter that your computer thinks your car is getting. Basically, you just run richer
