CRX or Corolla (86)
Depends on what you want to do?

I like the way the 86's look but Initial D jacked the prices way up. Considering the cars are almost 20 yrs old.
Whats your 1st car?

considering this is a honda board I'd say we are going to be kind of biased. I'd definitely choose the CRX. Its a lot easier to but a B16 into a rex than it is to put a black top into a AE86.

Yeah we are biased here, but I've owned both and gotta admit the Hachi is a cool car to have just because its so balanced and rear rwd. I got out of rwd and still have my track crx so I say depends what you want to do weekends? burn tires up drifting or burn tires up tracking

I WOULD GO CRX, MORE FLEXIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO PARTS AND AFFORDABILITY, GOOD LUCK

86's are not ballanced well at all.... ask anyone who has driven an 86 AND a s13/s14.... 86's are alot harder to drift than you think, they are seriously underpowered, and parts are rare and expensive when compaired to a crx.
You say you want to get power to a 86? with 20valve silver top or black top? its rated pretty much the same as a b16, same bore and stroke, same hp/tq specs from factory....
20valve swap needs firewall cut or dented in, air box inlet needs to be rewelded to fit, lots of wiring and custom radiator lines. And dont forget b16's have b16's trannies... stock 86 is around 3.9 final drive which is like running ls tranny on b16= dogg
What about 4agze(supercharged), most people I have talked to that done this swap wished they did a 20v swap instead because they have overheating issues, but can be somewhat eliminated with a front mount intercooler.
Interior quality is more to be desired, the only thing good is the gts seats which have lots of adjustment
things you'll need to drift--
1. suspension, say you go cheap and get eibachs and kyb agx's
2. you still need lsd, which is 400+ for STOCK GTS lsd, and not all gts's have lsd
3. rear end tends to break, and they are VERY expensive, as toyota doesnt make them anymore, and junkyards dont have many 86's left as many 86's owners horde parts up the wazzoo
4. http://www.club4ag.com
theres just a bunch of noobs there who think drifting is easy, and cool and whatnot... try finding info on a swap and you'll get 10different answers from people who have no personal experience and what they've "heard" from other people....
5. 90%(guess) of 86's enthusiasts have stock motors, don't drift....
I would rather get a s13 240sx for drift.
ugh, that was too long of a post....

It all depends on which one has a big aftermarket support and a huge community to back it up.
So...you pretty much know the answer to this question.
I'd take the AE86, but only keep it stock.

To answer some questions.
Nothing is wrong with my car. I am getting a new car like a WRX (or maybe an RSX). When I would move out with my friend, we want a project car... either the AE86 or a CRX.
So I would already have a fast car, so maybe instead of 2 fast cars, we would get a drifter.

Drivers Drift
Cars don't
Drifting is more about driver skill not just "hey look at me fishtailing in an empty parking lot!!!"
Moto did comment on the AE86 board that they aren't as cheap as many people believe, figure about 3000-4000 on top of what you paid for it....
For a beater get the REX!!!
