Default Timing Belt Replacement

I have a 1993 Accord LX with 39,000 miles on it. Recently purchased it about 3 weeks ago. So far I have replaced an axle on it and i have been recommended by a local honda dealership that i should have the timing belt replaced and have the timing checked. The tranny fluid and brake fluid is going to be changed too. Timing belt replacement is going to be $500, brake flush, refill, and bleed will be $100, and tranny fluid will be $50. Would you agree with this maintenance or not?

a 93 with 39,000 miles?!?!?! wow thats pretty unheard of. unless the car was sitting in a garage for a long LONG time or wasn't drive too TOO far. anywho, timing belts have to be replaced at 90,000 miles. so there is no need at this point to replace it. unless it's been sitting for awhile, i would go ahead a replace it for good measure. be sure to replace the water pump and related oil seals when doing so. the brake and tranny fluid should be ok but again if the car had been sitting for a while i would go ahead and have them replaced as well. good luck!

ya, if it was sitting forever, get that timing belt changed. just like tires, or any rubber, it will rott over the years, and the 90k is assuming that you drive the car the average amount, thats actually better for the belt than just sitting there. Or you could chance it, but if it breaks, you will smash all of your valves due to it being an interference engine, and that will cost much more than the belt change would.

yeah it like brand new. it had 25,000 miles in 95. 100 miles on it last year. Have to replace seals tho. And there is lots of hair in the interior, the person who owned it before me had hairloss and a fettish for ice scrapers (i found 10!)

congrats on getting the car. I remember talking to you about it when you were thinking about buying it.

I would agree with the maintenance, but I wouldn't agree with the price. $100 just to change the brake fluid!?!? I did that on my friends car for a #2 at McDonalds(double cheeseburgers own me). I would shop around for quotes from different places.

Dealers always try to screw you.

Sure it could. I have personally seen a few with that low of mileage before.

Also about the maintenance issues, Honda recommends timing belt replacement based on time and/or mileage of 6 years/90k miles, whichever occures first. Would definitely recommend all the above maintenance. Doesn't sound too high for a dealership. The brake fluid and coolant has a shelf life just like everything else. In laymans terms, if it sits, it goes bad over time.

As for the cost of t-belt replacement, it's generally $500 parts and labor. Honda dealerships don't just replace belt though, they replace t-belt, water pump, balance shaft belt, and all drivebelts and perform coolant flush. So there is a little more than just replacing belt only.

As for pricing, we will replace entire t-belt package (just like I listed above) for $375-$400 depending on which car it is. Obviously, a DOHC will be a little more than a SOHC, V6 would be a little more than 4cyl, etc.

And we only use honda genuine parts, no aftermarket parts for general service, unless at customers request, which then we would only stand behind labor for.

Hope this gives you an idea of everything....

If it is true, then the timing belt is not due to be replaced for a while. At least mileage wise.

That is why I said time or mileage, whichever occurs FIRST. Obviously this timing belt should definitely be replaced due to time, not mileage.

yea, i think my mechanic said he'd charge me around 400 for t-belt, water pump, and all those other seals and stuff. i trust my mechanic, never go to dealreship myself.

edit: good find. i got my 92 accord about 2 years ago with 65k on it, and i thought that was pretty low. now its got 85k on it.
