Default Getting engine codes from a 97 Accord EX

I have a 97 Accord EX four cyl. with the "Check Engine light coming on. According to my service manual I need to have an instrument for reading the code, Can it be read without this device and if not are they available to purchase?

Thanks for any help.

Yes you can read it yourself .. but going to autozone would be easy. If you really want to do it yourself. If you look under your glove back you will see a blue plug. I don't believe it is really plugged into anything, so take this out and bridge it with a paper clip. Turn on your car, (don't start it) and watch it blink.
