Custom Built Open Trailer...questions and thoughts.
I went and priced a few open car trailers, and frankly none of the prebuilt models are what I really want. So, I am am looking at having something custom built to my specs (still open trailers). This will be for hauling my ITR and some of my misc older Civics.
Has anyone went this route, and how much more did you pay than a prebuilt model? I've went to three different places, gave each the same specs, and came out with prices varying by a substantial amount ($1000 difference in some cases, which is a lot considering we're only in a $2K pricerange).
Still, I think something custom built is the way to go because I'm picky about what I need. The only prebuilt trailers I can find around me are trailers capable of hauling a bulldozer it seems. I guess folks in the midwest don't make anything smaller than a 16' trailer with 5" channel.
And yes, I know that I should buy more trailer than I need. However, if the day comes where I need a larger trailer, I'll buy one then. Right now I want to get something that's a perfect fit for what I own. Plus, I'll invest in a larger tow vehicle then.

I'd have to double check the 5" channel, but I'm currently towing the CRX with a 16' open and I'm really glad it's not any shorter. At first it was just the car, but then you start adding tool boxes and tire racks and pretty soon it's too damn small. Plus, your ITR is longer than my rex.
But that aside, what is it that you're looking for? The trailer place I bought mine from had a whole sheet of options for my trailer because the order each one as they are sold. Plus, they offer a ton of custom work like seating decks and whatever crazy stuff you can dream up. If I knew what you were looking for, I could ask them and get you another ballpark price just as a data point.

Check out Classic Mfg for their trailers- I have one and like it a great deal. It pulls great and has hauled my ITC CRX well for 10 years among other items. Their website is http://www.classicmfg.com/mainpage.htm

Depends on what you want custom on your trailer but I was able to have mine semi-custom built. I found a small dealer in Texas that is near one of the traditional western US trailer manufacturers. He is so close to the factory that he doesn't stock anything and just has trailers built to whatever spec the customer wants and there is no special order fee. I had them make changes in the deck shape, length of the beaver tail, hitch, wheels and color. I got it all (18 ft. closed deck steel diamond plate) for about $1700 with new trailer tires and spoke wheels. I thought that was pretty good. If that fits your interest, I could put you in touch with him.

haha, i can't remember.... i wan't tracking my car, although i wish i was... i was moving out of state at the time...
but, i suppose if you had to trailer your car to an event that was a ways away and you didn't want to invest the money in a trailer, you could rent one...

Since you are looking for something suited to your needs-check out R&R. They are in Michigan and build a really nice all-aluminum trailer in 16'-20' lengths. I actually overbought and got a 20' for the CRX. (e-mail for picture) Could not be happier except I actually should have bought the 18' version. Tows just fine (trailer weighs 1250 bare) with a solid deck. YES-you can put racks and other stuff on if you want and the ramps are used as an airdam in front (slick idea).
Don't know how custom you want but I ran into this post for a 3 year old 18 ft. open trailer for $1200. If anyone is interested, check out http://www.coloradoscca.org/pr...=2367

I know the extra length would be nice, but I don't want anything over 14'. 14' would fit in my garage, with car on it, perfectly. I have the back of the truck for all of the extra crap, plus ST doesn't require 10 sets of tires like some classes do. Also, shorter = lighter.
If anyone knows someone in the midwest (Oh, Ky, Mi, In, Pa, etc) that does custom stuff fcor a good price, I'd be listening. I just don't want to drive to Kansas or something for a trailer. I'd be better off paying a few hundred extra from the guy that does them 20 minutes from me.
Although, that 16' Aluminum model is tempting, but I'm sure expensive.
