Remove brake shims?

Default OT: brake shim

ive searched and all it comes up, is people saying there brake pad didnt have shims. my question is, is it really necessary to have shims on them? will i be fine without installing the shims on the rear and the front? thanks in advance.

I removed the shims when installing new pads a few months ago, no problems here.
