Civic Type R in the States!!!
My girlfriend has been telling me about this foreign kid who sits near her in her German class for some time now. She tells me how he says Integra Type R's are such pieces of crap, etc etc etc.
Turns out this kid is Polish, and his father is some big businessman who got transferred to America. Apparently he took his Civic Type R with him. My girlfriend hasn't seen the car, but another person in her class who has says it looks like "a small lowrider minivan with the steering wheel on the wrong side" (Which I thought was hilarious)
This seems kind of fishy to me, I didn't think you could just "bring your car with you," doesn't it have to pass department of transportation tests before a car like that is considered street legal? Or does it not really matter...
Hmmmmmmmmmmm... I'll try to get more details on this.

There are many loopholes in the laws governing vehicle import... How do you think we get certain supercars into this country... Ever seen an EVO V in the states ? There are a couple around.....
Plus, his dad's a 'businessman' ? As you should know... $$ talks and bullsnit walks....

Cant wait to test drive one, although from what the press are saying it is not the car that everyone has been waiting for, arent the emmissions much more stringent in the US...maybe it conforms everywhere?
If he has diplomatic plates he can drive it here in the US for up to 12 months. At which point the car has to return to it's registrant country or be destroyed.

Yeah I like to think of the CTR as a Super Mini MPV. On the import laws thing, I saw a new Alfa Romeo convertible with diplomatic (they looked European) plates on the highway in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley in VA. Go figure.
Definitely try to get some pictures if you can.

No need to import the car. You can just take it with you for a certain period, and take it back to home afterwards.
I sometimes see a car driving overhere with USA plates. Oke, it's VERY rare, and it must be VERY expensive to ship (fly?!) it over.
Next to that. WTF? Polish cars have LHD just like USA cars and other European cars ( except for UK
).

While on the topic, I did a search for the 2002 Civic Type R and here is one link:

"Expect to see the 2002 Civic Type R
come to America sometime in the summer
of next year (2002)."
They also say that it beats the new Honda Integra Type R in every arena of performance.

Actually CTR's and ITR's can be got rather easy here if you have the exact cash in hand. The hardest would be buying one then reconfiguring the car so it would pass emission which is actually the hardest part of the test. Since the car looks like and meets almost the same stds in crash testing as the similar car already here or in the recent past it is normally never crash tested. I had talking with friend of mine that imports Ferrari's and such for dealership here though Ferrari trying to lock down on grey import in the US atleast on newer models that just came out. But the easiest way would buy a salvage vechile which means in alot of cases the #'s don't match and there for alot times you can register it as kit car which atleast here makes the car legal no matter what the regulations are. Also just because someone has the car doesn't mean it's legal. When you import the car customs will ask how your going to do it..go through all the tests to make it daily driver, racer car, or collector cars. Most choose the collectors car which means you don't have to do any test whats so ever atleast in most states but you can only drive it 3,000 miles per yr I believe the limit is. You have to report this every yr and they will come to spot check the car from time to time. I've seen quite a few exotic cars here that are here this way and there owners don't drive them except on the weekends only. But to tell you the truth it's not that hard to make a CTR pass emission testing which there is overall limit and then your states std testing. As for the new CTR if it passes UK emissions it will and should pass US emissions. The Subaru WRX STi is coming to the US with HP matched from the UK spec one releasing there this coming Jan. One thing I like in the UK is the MOT which you have to do every yr which basically states to the gov. your car is in working order and not going to break down any time soon. If something wrong with it you have to fix it. I think it be great way to keep smokin' exhaust cars off the road and people from getting stranded because they forgot to check there battery and connections and basically anything that could cause a hazard to yourself or to other fellow travellers.
