Default DOHC daily driver... need exhaust options with less boom.

1) I am not a ricer, please don't flame me...heh heh
2) I would really like some serious input on this as it's for my daily driver.

My setup:

A b18c1 with some bottom end work done... I am currently running just an intake, stock header, stock gsr cat and a 2.5" mandrel cat back to a ricey AroSpeed muffler.

My Issues:

My car is a major sleeper, but the Arospeed is LOUD, even with the silencer on (the way I run it daily), it is loud as hell at WOT and drones incessantly at highway speeds (65-80). I am in no way a fan of arospeed, but it came with the chassis when I bought it and I saw fit to upgrade other parts first.

My Plans:

I will eventually upgrade the stock header to a DC unit or jdm ITR stock header, which ever I can find cheaper.

What I want:

I want more quiet with minimum loss of power... preferably NONE.

I don't want to swap out my whole exhaust system as I'm satisfied w/ the mandrel work I have...plus I don't like the aural performance of most of the name brand units I've heard thus far. My original plan was to switch to a stock ITR muffler on the 2.5" piping, but now I am wondering how much power that would lose. So I am also considering the alternative of getting the stock muffler from a higher displacement or stock turbo car welded to my piping. (Say an IS300 or WRX muffler)

My secondary concern is whether a stock muffler of this caliber would negate the use of an upgraded header. I would happily remove the muffler for a big track day, but daily driver... this arospeed s**t has gotta go.

Please give some recommendations.... and keep in mind... my wife hates my car and wishes I could get sponsored by Dynamat.

X2

Check out the Thermal R&D Classic. That thing is pretty quiet and from what I hear it has good gains (as not to lose any swapping). Check out this article and try the soundclips. They aren't the best but it gives you a general idea from the more common brands out there. I'm actually starting to like the idea of the Thermal over my Tanabe hehe. It came down to these two but I went loud...It would be louder without that scaled resonator...damn that resonator....

isn't a resonator basically a straight thru muffler ? I'd think there'd be a little loss for adding one.... plus a muffler...

Imma check those sound clips when I get home... where I have speakers.... big ones...lol

You going to loose a little power if you want your exhaust quieter.......no buts about it.you want less noise you need more mufflers or resonators and they take power away

edit:i advice magnaflow mufflers, pretty quiet

Thermal R&D or Apexi World Sport....both are good exhausts in my eyes and they will give you what you are looking for.

Actually, I've heard the Apex WS and it's not loud, but I've found it to have a low, raspy sound... not to be a ricer... but I have never really liked it on a dohc. hrmmm...

The Thermals I've only heard on boosted cars... and a RSX-S (n/a)... which did sound decent.

I've never heard a brospeed/bosal on a honda b4.

I have a WS on my b18c1 swapped hatch with a 421 header. It is not raspy at all. I have owned both thermal classic and stealth catbacks and they were both loud.

There is almost no way around having a raspy exhaust note. The ones i mentioned before will mask the raspy sound as much as they can but, at the end of the day its still a honda motor and thats the sound they are known to give out.

If you want something quite but still sounds not stock go with an Apex-i World Sport....I have had quite a few systems and this one is by for the best one and the quitest.... I love it.....

"The World Sport concept is A'PEX's interpretation of how each vehicle's exhaust system should have looked and performed right from the factory. Designed with the daily driver in mind, this exhaust series focuses on drawing out mid-range torque and engine response for optimal drivability on the street. The styling is subtle and elegant, but still retains characteristics of its racing origin. The result is an affordable cat-back exhaust system that makes the daily commute more enjoyable."

^--- This is why I got mine, I truly think its one of the best sounding systems on the market....I am sure that anyone who bought one would agree...

Both Apexi N-1 Is great and the Greddy EVO isn Nice!

Both top end get a lil loud (VTEC) but you'll get that from every catback.

Personally I have an EVO on my DD and it very quiet. I have a fully built GSR Internally, Skunk Maifold, JG T/B, CTR CAMS, ITR Header, 3 inch resinator, and various bolt on's and my exhaust system sounds great! Good Luck!

Thermal is good. If you want to keep the sound down stay away from N1 style exhausts like the APEXi.

That's what I'm talking about. !

The N1 style seems to be very loud... my apex knock off is the N1 style canister... I've heard an EVO on a stock LS and is was ok.... but you also have a resonator....hmmm... I need research...lol

If it's loud at WOT...that's fine... it's partial throttle and idle I'm concerned about...

I also recommend the Apexi WS. I have it on my Si and it is slightly louder than stock. It has a very nice sound to it. I think the RS*R EXMAG is comperable to the WS also and would be another suggestion.

Since you don't want to replace the whole exhaust, your best bet would be to look at resonators or straight through mufflers. I would suggest a Moroso Spiral Flow muffler. My friend had a GSR with a cheap ebay muffler on a custom exhaust that was really loud, and his parents told him to make it quieter or sell it. He bought the Spiral Flow muffler, added it to his exhaust, and it quieted his system down nicely. It also got rid of some of the "tinging" in his exhaust. If it were me, I'd ditch the arospeed muffler alltogether and get a Magnaflow. Nice, reasonably quiet, and not too restrictive.

Definatly not raspy at all .. you can hardly hear it (on my b16)! But what you can hear, is nice and throaty. Very quiet, and the exhaust looks great.

Personally, I think that I have the best of both worlds. I have a DC 421 into a Y cut out. Then full regular exhaust. Quiet but loud, nice top end, loses some low end... Sounds better then any exhaust on the market, pure and straight.

just my 02 cents
