help!!! vtec not working and i cant figure out why!!!!
heres what happened: (h22 motor)
i blew my motor... melted a hole in piston #4. i took it apart and rebuilt the bottom end w/ pistons and rods. i left the head alone and assembled.
after i got it together and running i threw codes for 17, 22, and 41. 41 i fixed b/c of the hondata, i just made my o2 closed loop. as for the speed sensor, i replaced it. it works but every once in a while it goes crazy (bounces everywhere). and for the vtec oil pressure switch i also turned off w/ the hondata. (was told it would still work as long as theres oil pressure.
so i have no CEL but my vtec does not work. i took apart my solenoid and cleaned it, replaced the pressure switch, even put another one on from another car that was working. and still no vtec. i ripped out my knock sensor and i know theres no vtec w/o it but the p28 ecu does not have a knock. i also took out my secondaries in my intake manifold (i dont think thats the problem..)
i was told to T off the power wire to the solenoid and connect directly to a power source to see if it worked (simulate voltage when rpm is reached). with the car on it sould change the idle noticably or even shut off the car. will it still do that w/o a load on it? i didnt think i could test it that way.
im stumped... tried tuning my car but its useless w/o vtec
help please

If the VSS was new, check the wiring from it. They are easy to pinch when putting the motor in and out. If it was a used one, consider a new one. I suspect a bad wire gives intermittant contact which makes the computer unhappy and gives the occasional crazy speedo readings.
Any chance something got into the oil passages in the head when the bottom went boom? Are you sure there is good pressure at the solenoid?

everything was put back on the block.
i know if the vss was bad. it would throw a code. and when it does it should stop my revs at vtec. so my rev limiter would be at 5200.
but would a vss malfuctioning shouldnt my car still engage. i can still rev to redline w/o a problem. my vss works when im accelarating, when i let off the gas it goes bonkers, and when put it in neutral it drops to zero. it only happens sometimes. but would it stop my vtec all together when its like that. mph climbs smoothly when im at WOT.

it doesn't throw an imediate code, sometimes you can drive for allmost hours without the code throwing.and no it won't stop your revs at vtec, you will be limited to around 6700-7000ish.
