what tire brand to get?
i know if u dont go with the oem spec for the oem s02 the 225/50/16 are = to a non-oem s02 which is 245/45/16. i dont have the money to get s02 or s03. what other tire choices do i have. there are yokohama avs es 100 that i was looking into, but there is a wait till febuary 29. anyone know of any good brands out there? i am not going to track this car, but i may do agressive driving here and there.

The 5000s are great all-season tires, they're sticky in the dry and bite through snow pretty well. A good choice if you drive your S2K in snowy climates.
The KDWs are great too but won't hold up well in the snow.

if you are referring to the Dunlop SP5000's please don't recommend this tire. horrible horrible tire. it chunks off, handles poorly and has a weak sidewall. sure they handle fine in snow and rain, but that is for the northern guys to argue about while driving a two seater convertible.
the KDW's are fine, but not as good as the OEM S02's nor the S03's.
if you don't have the money for the OEM S02's or S03's, make sure you don't complain about the handling degredation after you get anything else. depending on the tire, the sidewalls will be slightly weaker, and the treadwear rating will be much harder. so... go ahead with the ES100's, for the dollar, they are about an 80% tire for 60% of the cost.

I had a set of SP5000s on my Integra GS-R and loved them. They wore down fairly fast but I knew that would happen. Chunking shouldn't happen to a street tire unless you're racing on it.
I can't speak from personal experience, but I've heard from other owners about their personal experience. Go with the S02s. You WILL BE DISAPPOINTED with performance if you go with any of the tires mentioned above. Not to mention, you don't want to place any of the aforementioned tires in the rear if you have stock S02s on the front still.

The GSR might favor the SP5000's, this car will not. Heck, even a Miata will not favor the SP5000's. They are horrible, even for just spirited driving. If you really must go with a dunlop, go with the SP8000's, not 9000's, which have less of a contact patch for channeling water, but the SP8000's. But I don't recommend them at all.

I'd wait if you can for the right tires. these are ~280 treadwear tires, which are a bit harder than the ES100's. even though they might carry the same treadwear rating, it varies brand by brand in how they rate their tires. and to give you some reference, the OEM S02's are rated at 160, r compounds such as the victo racers are at 40 and toyo ra-1's are at 60.
wait on the right tires, or spend the right dollars on the right OEM spec tires. this is a sports car and you really can't cheap out on the tires. if you cheap out on the tires, and then come back and buy some suspension components - your car will still suck. I mean that too. the tires are the first & last suspension component to make a difference since the tires are the only part of your car that actually makes contact to the ground.
/my two cents.

Sounds like you're stretching yourself to be driving this car.
Anything less than OEM S-02s on stock rims or bigger, wider rims on S-03s pretty much rids the S2000 of its handling fun. Ricers talk about Teins providing amazing handling, but really, it's 90%+ tires.
With all that said, go with Yoko ES-100s if you really, really can't afford the Potenzas.
Good luck,

If you're willing to drive down to OC bro, I can get you some good prices on tires mounted and balanced. I do not make a dime out of it.
Bang for the buck, I'd get some Es100s. I think I can get So2s for roughly 145 or so out the door for the fronts. The rears are a little bit more.

I am up in the Pac. Northwest and have all season tires on the rear with my stock S02' up front... Is this a bad idea??? We have been having some very shitty weather up here and was a bit scared of the S02's that were pretty bald anyway so I swapped them. Did I make a mistake?

no flaming or nething but which ones are the SO2's or SO3's? who makes them are they stickY? aren't those the Bridgestones or whatever that makes em? are they really good? sorry haven't really heard much of em. what about the Ao32's? i have been really thinking about em but ppl say they wont last more than a month or so. is this true?
Yes I can bro. Just PM me what you need and what you want to spend. I'm not in it for the money so I guarantee I'm not making anything off it other than looking good to my tire guy.

Yes, it will most likely negatively affect your handling. It will be exhibited more so with a S2000 IMO. With the rain you guys get in the PacNW I would get matching front tires.

So2s are the dry weather version of So3s. So3s are more of an all weather version. Being in SoCal I feel I can get away with using So2s during the rainy season as long as I drive the safe speeds for the conditions. They are made by Bridgestones. If you get So2s for the stock wheels make sure you get the OEM so2s. If you get a different tire, you must get wider tires as WRS2k suggested. The So2s are much wider than what is listed on the tire.
I'm not sure about the Ao32s but tirerack.com has excellent reviews on tires.

JMS JT's giving out some good advice on a silver platter, but I'll tell you straight up that you're playing with yourself by mix/matching tires.
You'd be better off going close-to-wear-bar S-02s than getting ghetto all-season tires in the back!
That's crazy, man. It's a high hp, lightweight, RWD car.
Get a set of matched tires now.

I disagree! These feel a hundred times better in poor weather than "close-to-wear-bar " S02's... I was only curious if my tire choice had been poor for this car. The stock tires were like trash can lids on the back of a rocket ship in the snow. Granted my handling in dry weather is going to be affected but that is not my current concern.

I'm telling you that you are making a mistake with your tire setup. Go ahead and post this on s2ki.com and see what kind of pleasant responses you will get.
I highly recommend that you match your tires at all FOUR corners.

I agree. The current setup with the OEM S02's in the front and all-seasons on the rear (which are probably the wrong size anyways, right? I bet they are 225/50's!) is a far worse setup than having SP5000's on this car. (not to bash those tires - again - as a whole, but they are not meant for this car)

so s02 it is, for all four. it seems as if u dont go s02 you will be majorly upset. for the guy that recommended this, is this for an s2 that does see the track? or just normal driving?

I went with the Khumo 712 to save money for my track rubber (Toyo RA-1) and they do not stand up to the SO2 peformance on a supercharged S2000. The rear can get really twitchy on a moderatly cold surface.
