You can purchase an AFE Filter Cleaning Kit, or K&N Recharger Kit. But water works just fine. Haha

problem with just water is the filter doesnt get the oil on it and things dont stick as well
also the oil saturates the fibers making it harder for tiny particles to get through

yup, you need to clean it the right way and re-oil it after or else it about as good as not having a filter on there at all.

I wash mine with simple green and then use filter oil. Works great for me!

I'm with him ^ . Just spray on the cleaner, rinse it off, let dry, and re-oil. If you don't use the kit and just clean the filter with soap, remember to re-oil it. The oil is what helps the filter, filter small particles.

oh yeah don't forget to mention that you need to rinse from the inside out. That way small particle are fluched off of the surface and not lodged further into the filter.

Definately do it inside out.

If it's a cheapo generic filter, your better off just buying a new one for 10-15 bucks.

Also DO NOT use forced warm air to dry the filter... it will shrink the element and make it NOT filter the way it should even when "properly" oiled...

I ignored the instructions and tried to use just a little to speed up the drying time... and it DEFINATELY shrunk... it was obvious... the intake tube now get's WAY dirtier... I have to get a new filter...

And like mentioned they are NOT 15 bucks... the cheapest place I've found them so far is nopionline... I think they're like 38 bucks... everywhere else is like 58 something...that's the msrp.

And frankly I think going with a K&N is worth it... there may be better brands (I don't know of any) but K&N has been good enough for TONS of racers for years and years...

And if you care for the filter properly they have a lifetime warranty (or pretty close at least).

hehehe that's why they come with a sticker that says "STOP don't throw away" You probably won't notice the difference between a clogged up K&N and a new Fram, but you would have noticed the difference between a clogged K&N and a clean one. I've cleaned some really cruddy looking filters before (i.e. open element on a sand rail). If you use the K&N cleaning kit (and a dry paint brush to get all the crap off first), and follow the instructions they are good as new. That's why they come with a million mile warrantee

does it say,"don't throw away" on the filter itself or the box... I didn't have the box... the filter was in the car when I bought it
