Default does air in the strut mean it's dead?

I've had a kind of a squeeking noise coming from the rear of my CRX now for a while and lastnight I decided to get rid of it. After much searching and lubing, I found that my passenger side strut was making noise. I pulled it out and took off the spring to inspect it and I found that it had a lot of stichion. I tuned it upside down and ran it through it's travel to lube the seals which worked pretty well at getting rid of the noise.

I noticed though that there was air in the shock and that it could travel about half an inch with no dampening at all. Does this mean it's been leaking and is in need of replacing?

Thanks
