Default Mugen Rear SWay Bar ripping apart subframe?

Hey guys, I was told if you put a Mugen or even a Type R rear sway bar in a non R it will rip apart the subframe. Is this true? Anyway to correct this?

Any larger sway bar CAN have the ability to tear the subframe. Fortunately for me, I've never had that problem. BUT if you want to be on the safe side, get the Beaks or BSQ swaybar mount kit.

Yup, My friend's 94 GSR bought the R's rear sway bar from the dealer and by using same factory mt pts end up ripping a big hole on the center subframe. That is why places like comptech charge u lot more for the whole kit because it includes subframe reenforced mts plates to aid the GSR thinner subframe.

Yep, the ITR has a hole new system to make sure that it doesn't rip the subframe, make sure you get similar mounts and brackets.

The main cause of subframe tearout is NOT mounting the swaybar directly to the subframe. All non-Type-R Integras use mounting brackets which mounts the rear swaybar AWAY from the subframe. But the Type-R's rear swaybar is mounted DIRECTLY to the subframe. By mounting the swaybar directly to the subframe you greatly reduce the amount of leverage and stress that the swaybar can exert on the subframe and mounting points.

Please refer to my step-by-step installation instructions on my website ( http://www.geocities.com/bretq/swaybar_install.html ) for installing a Type-R rear swaybar on a non-Type-R Integra. You will see that my instructions have eliminated the stock mounting bracket and uses new mounting plates which allows the Type-R rear swaybar to be mounted DIRECTLY subframe. The mounting plates also reinforces the subframe sheetmetal.

I knew you'd show up sooner or later to answer these questions.

So what gives? Am I just a luck ****? I've had my ITR bar on my EX for almost 3 years now, and no problems. And yes, I abuse my car on the street and track. I've even had the damm thing spin out on me from time to time.

You didn't mention how you have the Type-R rear swaybar mounted on your EX. Do you have it mounted away from the subframe using the Hybrid installation method or directly to the subframe using my installation method?

FYI, I have had my Type-R rear swaybar installed for 3.5+ years now and I have 21+ hours of track time on it and I haven't experienced any problems.

Ok I visited your site, it said it was for 92-95 Civics, I will be installing a Mugen rear sway bar on a 2000 Civic DX Hatchback. Will your kit still work or not?

B18C-EJ1, I would say that you are "lucky". The reason that I say this is because a lot of people have installed their Type-R swaybars in a similiar fashion (ie. Hybrid Honda method) and they have experienced subframe tearout. The only thing that may be working to your benefit is that you have a Civic (weighs less) and you are using the Type-R swaybar bushing and bushing bracket. The Type-R bushing is thicker in diameter which may "absorb" some of the stress applied by the larger swaybar as opposed to the thinner diameter ES swaybar bushings which may transmit more stress to the subframe.

Unfortunately, since the '99-'00 Civics subframe is different from the '92-'95 my mounting kit will not work. I would suggest going to http://www.clubsi.com and doing some research on the installation of the Type-R swaybar on '99-'00 Civic. I have read several post from that forum where a lot of people have been having problems with this combination. Good luck!!!

Well I visited Kings site, they have a rear sway for the DX, but its $100 more. I wonder why? Also, heres what Kings say-

This stabilizer minimizes vehicle rolling during cornering by creating a spring-like effect due to its twisting. The original type stabilizer allows steering characteristics to be tuned by selecting the thickness and hence the wheel rate. The kit also includes two stabilizer bushes for the body mountings. The rear stabilizer kits are supplied with a chassis reinforcement kit.

Does anyone know for sure if this is the kit I'll need so I dont rip apart my car?

Just for a second opinion, I have the BSQ kit installed for about a year now and it's working like a charm. If your looking to save money get the BSQ kit it does it's job like a champ.
