I want to know what would be the best swap for my car. It is a 91 CRX and it has an automatic transmission. I am looking to get alot more horsepower goin than what i got now. Please let me know what I should do. I was thinkin about getting a zc if it would work in my car. I looked at my engine and it said d15ab somthin like that I am not sure how much horespower I got right now, but I want more.

The B16A is a good choice if you want to rev high(er).

The B18A is more for torque and not as much top end.

Both are good choices.

If you aren't wanting to change to a five speed, you are limited to either a Zc, a CRX si(d16a6), or a SOHC VTEC(d16z6).
You will have to change to multi port injection for any of the swaps, but the sohc VTEC will be a little more involved( have to change more wiring )

I have no problem changing over to a 5 speed manual, do any of you know about how much it cost for a conversion like this. I am leaning towards a b16a , and I have $2,000 to spend right now. Thank you for the info guys, just found this website a couple days ago and it is awesome.

Thanks,Dave

the cheapest way to make that car more powerful without spending the money would be to search the junkyards. there are two engines that will drop into that car - the dohc integra (90-91) and the sohc del sol vtec engine. if you can find a car at a junk yard, or salvage yard that lets you buy the car for dirt cheap, then do it. you can then have all the parts you need - wiring, mounts, engine, tranny, pedals, etc. that is the cheapest way to go to get all the parts you need. then you just need to spend the time in taking everything out and putting it all together (after modding it of course) - which is half the fun!

It all comes down to time and money. A zc is the easiest but I've heard not possible to smog. A usdm b16a is very common with an abundent supply of parts and able to smog legally without slipping the guy a jefferson. than theres the b18 sereis that would yield you the most power but with slighlty less parts and the most expensive to install. Just forget about prelude and nsx engines. those are pipe dreams

How so?? I mean anything you can find for a B16, you can find in some shape or form for a B18a/c motors. You can probably get all the parts for a b18b as well, except the not applicable VTEC related items....unless you do an ls/vtec.
The B18 may be slightly harder to install, but not incredibly, since its platform is shared/based on the B16.

The B18A would be easier to install for 2 reasons:

1) You're using a non-OBD ECU with this engine. This means no rewiring for an OBD-1 ECU.
2) B18A has no VTEC. You don't need to add 4-wires (or however many) for VTEC.

Other than that it's all the same. Most USDM B-series engines are more expensive than JDM just because they're USDM. B16A3s are also pretty rare in CA...the only engine I know of that's more rare is the B17A. The B18As/Bs are readily available. And if you're thinking that you could use an older ECU with the B16A3 to make the wiring easy, then that would defeat the purpose of getting a B16A3 since it wouldn't be smog legal, as you need the right ECU for your engine. Might as well get a 1st gen B16A...
