'04 Civic Sedan - Strange tapping/slight squeak 5:38 PM 1/8/2004 Reply Edit
My girlfriend has an '04 Civic (automatic) with this tapping and slight squeak that almost sounds like a tapping injector. The noise is coming from the top, back side of the engine (near the throttle lever).
Obviously the car is going in for warranty reasons. However, I'm curious as to what the hell this noise is. This noise happens when the car is cold, and stops after the car has been warmed up for 15 to 20 minutes.
What do you think this might be? Thanks.

That's the plan. But that takes time, and I don't want her driving it if it's causing more damage. That, and I'm curious.

My guess is that your rockers are sluggish and the tapping is the effort to push the valves down. Have it checked, but I don't think they'll show a problem. What temperature is cold around your parts. I live in Canada and I get this problem in my y7 non-vtec even when it's 30+ degrees celcius, (mid to high 80's or early 90'sF). In colder temps, it will be accented but it does go away. If that scares you, wait untill it gets really cold and she sqeals like a stuck pig. That scared the hell outa me and it is all part of the engine getting lubrication. Don't sweat it, just let the Honda guys take a look. If I'm wrong, say I'm full of ****! Best of luck.
i have the same problem, I took it to honda and it turns out the noise is coming from one of the emission valve. Honda states its not a problem, Its normal for it to make the tapping sound. Might and might not be the same problem, but my noise is coming from the top driver side. Let me know what honda tells you.
dumpy, it's cold here. 8º is pretty chilly.
original, that's exactly where her noise is coming from (top driver side). I hope it isn't normal, and they can fix it because its kinda loud and very annoying. She's calling to setup a warranty visit tomorrow.

it could be your valves cuz its not warmed up. or like the other guy said it could be an emissions soleniod by the driver side. ive heard those before on acura tl's and that is normal but its covered under warenty so have no fear. when eh car doesnt move at all then worry
best of luck man

Sounds like canister purge valve or vent shut valve on top of EVAP canister. The canister purge valve will make a little noise due to cycling on and off to purging fuel vapors into the engine for evaporative emission control (this is probably most noticeable at idle). Is it too loud and maybe defective? Possibly. Best to have dealership take look at it.
I have seen this same concern before on '01-up Civics and '98-up accords
at the dealership I worked at
.
Hope this helps
