Rebuilding ZC Motor???
I haven't gotten the motor yet, but I'm trying to figure out which motor to get for a 2nd generation CRX. I've narrowed it down to the D16Z6 (SOHC VTEC) or the ZC (JDM DOHC Non-VTEC). Sort of on a budget, yet looking to upgrade the motor later on after the purchase for more reliability, since these two motors are rather old.
I was wondering if it is hard to obtain items such as pistons, rods, cam shaft, cam gears, etc. to rebuild a stronger ZC motor. Is the parts interchangable with any USDM motors? I've noticed that the older Integra and Preludes are sources to the ZC motor such as intake manifold, exhaust manifold, head manifold, spark plugs, etc., but I would like to see if it would be possible to rebuild the ZC.
Of course, I do realize that the D16Z6 has many more aftermarket parts, but I rather the DOHC over the SOHC (even though it doesn't have VTEC). This is partially due to the fact that I don't want to deal with hooking up the VTEC, and if I do get the VTEC, I won't settle for anything less than the APEX'i VTEC Controller. This is rather expensive however. But then again, so is rebuilding a motor.
If there aren't any parts for the ZC motor, how can I go about making the motor run better than what it is when the shipment comes in? Can I do anything to the block? Would any of you guys recommend port-n-polish the head?
I will be running all motor, making this car a daily driver. So I won't even consider turbo, supercharger, or NOS. I'm not looking at a 10 second car, but more of a reliable speedy CRX that can out-run a few cars on the road.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I just recently rebuilt my ZC motor.
I used 88-89 Teg pistons and piston rings. I used 86 Integra rods with ARP bolts.
Most seals are from the 88-89 Teg.
I was able to find a used ZC crank to replace my bad crank. I used the original cams and cam gears, but I hear you can use B series cam gears. Cams is a different story...but I have heard of some ZC cams that are available in Japan (obviously).
And check my sig for the hp and tq ratings. That is bone stock!

well i heard hks makes zc cam shaft... the intake & exhaust... but i don't know if this would be worth the money... considering it is around $800+ for both... but then again... nothing is cheap these days...
anyways... how well is your motor running after the rebuilt with the new pistons/rods?
thanks for the input...

The car runs really well. I have a few bugs to diagnose, but overall it runs strong. Pulls very good, too.
Well i had a zc motor about 6 months ago and shot a 75 shot on it every day for a year about 2 10lb bottles a week and i never had any trouble at all and it 7.80s in the 1/8 with no motor work.
