Default Preload on Sway bars

93 EG with a 22mm front sway and 22 mm ITR rear sway. Can I use regular washers to shim the pre-load on these. I plan on corner weighting before I preload the bars and afterwards. Does anyone have experience with the cross weights changing.??

I usually find stuff when I search however my specific question is has anyone experienced any play with using the stacked washers under the end links. Does someone use anything other than washers say a urethane or hard rubber bushing to shim the sway bar for preload. I just don't want it coming loose or deflecting too much under load...and its going to get some major loads. Solo-x (Nate) any thoughts on this. I don't have your email anymore but IM me privately so I don't get locked again.

i assume you mean you are going to remove preload, correct?

at any rate, the rear swaybar is tough to change preload on since you would have to make your own adjustable endlink. (i've heard of someone selling these, don't have any info on it though) the front is easier. washers will work on the front and since they are captured on the bolt and in compression they won't slip at all. on the rear, i don't know if using a washer to space the d-bracket out will affect preload enough to be worth it.

just in case there is any confusion, the procedure that should be followed is like this:

#1 set ride height
#2 set cornerweights with swaybars disconnected
#3 align
#4 re-check cornerweights, still with swaybars disconnected
#5 re-attach swaybars, shim so no preload is on the bar

on my car it turned out that i didn't need to remove any preload from the rear bar. probably had something to do with the springrates or something. on the front i used a different length spacer between where the swaybar bushings are seperated from the lca bushings. the spacer that comes stock is about 1/4"-3/8" long. i removed it on the side that needed adjustment and put a 1/2" spacer in instead. hth

Yup, sorry remove preload. I suspect i won't have to do much for either end and yes with your spring rates I doubt you'd have to do much preload adjustments to the rear. Same here although I am not going to go with quite that stiff springs as you do.

I was worried about washers (shims) moving or slipping and backing the endlink nut off. Thanks Nate. Your not going to Atlanta.?

No ****...whatever though. All the time I was a moderator on SE-R forums for autocross and road race I NEVER had a post locked..I am 3 for 3 here. Damn I even searched before I posted like I always do...I do have alot of car tunig knowledge and an SCCA PRO SOLO title to boot but I guess its knowledge that's gonna be hard to disseminate here.

I Emailed you a while back for wheel rates and motion ratios...thanks for the info btw

nope, no atlanta for me. car is still rockin the snow tires and i only have 3 race wheels right now.

no worries about the washers causing any problems with the endlink nut. well, unless you're using several inches worth of washers. at that point i would be looking into a different tub.

I'm really not trying to be a pain in the ***. But one post was a WTB, the other one was on a topic that there was already a thread on, and there's so many camber and alignment threads i didnt even look at half of them before i posted links to older threads. Just try to reduce clutter thats all.

Hope this helps,

RJ

clutter huh. I disagree it was not a WTB there are 5000 places selling the A -arms and I want the cheapest closest place and the thread also invites input from those who use them. Whatever though do what you gotta do dude.

If the endlink nut is still getting a lot of thread engagement, I don't think you'll have a problem with it coming loose once you've got it tightened against however many washers you need to shim the bar. You could eyeball it every once in a while to see if it's still tight or put some put some of the weaker Loctite (can't remember which color) on it if it concerns you.

what an excuse. If I only had a spare set of wheels I could lend you I would.

I might get around to taking out the preload on my swaybars by then. Rear should be easy but the fronts I'm not sure about.
