Default Failed my Smog Test Again!!!

well i failed my smog test for the second time in 2 weeks...first time my check engine light was on and i fixed my distributor and timing belt which fixed the light...after that my NOx levels failed!!!! i measured in at:
1143 when the max allowed is 711...this is at 15mph

I passed everything except the NOx level at 15mph!!!!!!!!!

my question is if Chevron Fuel Injector Cleaner be able to lower my NOx level enough for me to pass....i did a search and most of them said changing a Cat may or may not work...thanks in advance!!!!!!!

Are you running at spec for the ignition timing? What were the measured results for the other components of the smog test?

if you have after market exhaust headers...this is way youre failing. aftermarket headers don't heat up catalytic converter to temp for them to work properly.

retarding time = fail in California. must have stock timing 14-16btdc

what you can try is right before you take it in for smog. run you car hard on the freeway for 10-15 minutes. heating up cat as much as you can...so you can pass idle emmissions.

you should note buying a street car that can not pass smog. it is owners responsibility to make sure it smogs b4 selling it.

I'm pretty sure there are little shops that have the smog machines. They can help fix your problem so u can pass easily. It will also be way cheaper than going to the dealership! Something for you to consider.

damn that sucks, you should look for a smog shop that'll do a pretest first and if its gonna pass they'll test it again otherwise they will tell you what to fix. but i agree you should put a new cat on and maybe some new plugs and wires if you haven't already and drive it for like 20 minutes hard on the freeway before you go in.

I think the 15mph test is being done at too low RPM. It appears the low rpm/high loading is what is causing the NOx to spike. Talk with the smog tech running the test if the test can be done one gear lower. 1960rpm for a four cylinder is a little harsh, and I believe the test permits a range between 1800-3200 rpm.

Your best chances of passing would be to have all stock components installed...

I heard this work, but you have to drive it in right into the shop. I also heard that if you put some alchol in your gas that will work too. You can try this which i know some factory supercharger cars is tring. What they do is have a NOS bottle set up but instead of injecting NOS they inject O2 into the exhaust system to "pure" the gases coming out. Also isn't there a thing where, if you spend more then 500.00 trying to get your car to pass smog and it doesn't still, they allow it to be driven until next years smog, and i heard you can do this for 3 years in a roll.

Sorry to jack this thread, but my teg is failing on NOx here in Ga. I can get the numbers for you guys later, but it's only failing NOx on the first test and everything else is fine. I tried retarding the inition which actually made it a little worse. I tested my O2 and it's fine. I replaced the cat less than a year ago.

I love living in a podunk county that doesn't even require emissions. I can rape my exhaust system and not think twice about it.

Congrats on the pass. I'm buying a 94 GS-R this weekend and the owner ran into a big ordeal trying to get it to pass. He also replaced the cat -- it passed with flying colors afterward.

The good news is that it's probably the age of the cat and presumbably not the car running extra-rich ruining the cc.

The bad part is my car is in the CA system as having "failed" now -- I think that may come down negative in the future.

not a problem unless you failed the test as a gross polluter...
