Any R Compound tires for 17" rims??
I was wondering if there are any R compound tires out there for 17" rims on a 00 civic. I want to get a big brake kit and most of them require 17" rims however the only tires that I have found for 17s are Hoosier slicks at 205/40/17 and heard that they dont last very long like a weekend or two at the track. I was thinking about just getting 16x7 rims and get some A032Rs or Azenis if there are any that fit and a Wilwood big brake kit which fit under 16s. I went to the streets of willow and my es100s just aint cuttin it. Any help or suggestions would be great! Thanks.
For 16" wheels, the sizing sucks. Your choices are either 225/50/16 R compound which is a huge tire, or a 215/40 hooiser which is an extremely expensive choice. As you said the hooiser don't last very long, nor do I think that they're worth the extra dough over a "standard" r compound for open track/DE events. As far as street tires, the 215/45/16 azenis is your best bet, but I don't know which big brake kits fit under 16" wheels -- and from I've read the wilwood kits (without dust seals etc) aren't ideal for a daily driven track car; therefore, that leaves you with the Brembo and StopTech kits which I know won't fit under a 16". (I tried to bribe stoptech into making me adapter pieces to fit their caliper/rotor under a 16", but they weren't interested in it.)
For 17" wheels, you can use the pirelli p zero corsa. It's an R compound, and has a 60AA treadwear rating-- meaning you could drive to the track on them, but I woudln't suggest it. Like the hooiser it's also an expensive tire, but will last a lot longer than the hoosier.

In that size (205/40-17) it looks like you could get into a Hoosier (R3S03), Kumho (V700), Toyo RA-1. If you went w/ a 205/45-16, I found the Hoosier (R3S04), Kumho (V700), (and Hankook has a 215/40-16 in the Z211). I would think that you will find more sizing options in race tires in 15" rims than 17" but I am sure other folks can comment on that (I run 14"). As for Hoosiers not lasting a long weekend, even the R3S03s could do that EASILY. They just don't have the same stiction after multiple weekends and all the heat cycles. I ran practice on a set in October that were a year old and had run a race and practices in '02 and an enduro at Lowes MS in '03. They had very little stick left by the race in 03 but they held up perfectly well - just wouldn't "race" them on a demanding track at that point. The R3S04s in 16" are a step beyond and so far look to have much longer wear than the R3S03s - personally, I'd think if you were going 16's - thats definately the tire I'd run.

"Daily driven track car." Shouldn't that be "street car that you sometimes take to the track?" Doesn't sound as impressive, I guess.
