Default The joys of grinds: B16 Gearbox alternatives?

Well, my S1 is on it's way out. The synchros are gone between 2nd gear and 3rd gear, as well as 3rd gear to 4th.

trying to rebuild it will cost me nearly... well, it'll cost a lot.

so, my other option is, find another gearbox. What are my options?

GSR gearbox?
ITR?
LS?
another JDM gearbox that i can't get rebuild kits stateside, unless it's for $400 from some guy on H-T?

I don't mind making a hydro to cable conversion kit...plus, i'd like to get a LSD some day...

any ideas?

I would make your own homemade cable-hydro conversion kit and get an ITR transmission. Since it already comes with a factory LSD this route should be cheaper in the long run than getting another jdm cable transmission and installing an aftermarket LSD.

you have 3 options

HASport conversion kit w/ hydro tranny
win-sports gearing kit
adelia gearing kit

they will all run you roughly the same price

i thought all B16A 90-91 (S1/Y1/J1) trannies use D-series synchros. ask 'Mista Bone' for down low on that. if i'm right, than a rebuild is one option.

else, get another used B16A/B17A cable tranny (that will probably need a rebuild soon too).

else, get the hydro mount conversion.

else, get a 92-93 B-series tranny casing (VTEC or non-VTEC) and swap all the internals of any 94+ hyrdo VTEC B-series in it. 94+ internals are a dime a dozen.

Do what I did, I got tired of the cable tranny and decided to buy an ITR trans. B16a SI Hydro trans were going for $700 with no LSD so I said "why not get an ITR trans with LSD for about $300 more?" So then I got a killer deal on the Hasport Hydro conversion kit which includes all 3 mounts and the mechanism and I am now in the process of installing it pretty soon.

A little off topic.... Try running GM Sycromesh to see if it helps at all. It completely erased my second to third grind.
