Default broken cam gear

last weekend i was driving along when i heard a metallic rattle so i turned down the radio to see what it was , i didnt hear it anymore so i continued to drive, not even a halfa mile down the road the car bogged and died, so i popped the hood didnt see anything unusual got back in and tried to start it......... nothing,it just spun freely. first thing i thought was timing belt, but it was new. i pulled the timing cover and found out what happened so it turns out it bent all 8 exhaust valves. i should get the head back tomorrow afternoon. any ideas why this happened? belt tension?defective cam gear?

Before you put everything together check the bottom end and all items that associate with the timing belt.. thats not normal to bend the cam gear.
