Correct. And if you are in California you have to be able to pass smog as well.

Not true, JDM engines can pass smog.
Not true, JDM engines can pass smog.
It doesn't matter where you live, any car with a same-year or newer engine is legal, so long as you can prove it's yours. and where you folks that need smog checks, yes, jdm motors can pass smog.. I've seen people use fuel controllers to run a little bit on the lean side just to pass..
Si Coupes came out fall of 98 as the 99 Si.. 99/00 .

hhmm i stand corrected but im glad... i always wanted to swap a jdm in there... can someone tell me what u need to do to pass a smog with a jdm engine? assuming the ppl dont have their heads up their *** and can RECOGNIZE the engine of course..
thanks
ps the running lean fuel controller thing i read that, but is that all you have to do?

as far as I know that's the easiest way to pass.. but you better hope they know you have that thing running your engine lean.. i would have it set up, run it a couple days and keep it running lean but hide the controller or something.
aight but i have a 97 del sol, so does that mean i can't swap in a GSR motor? because i heard you're not allowed to in PA to swap in a bigger engine if your car is newer than 95...
Man I just got a hatchie with a B20/vtec...it better pass. I got buddies that work at shops. It really better pass or I am gonna be pissed as hell. I will have to go to my new duty station soon and I have to get the car legalized before I go anywhere.

thats is not really true. What more comes into play is what obd itt is. Say if you have a 95 gsr motor which is obd1, and you have a 96 civic chassis which is suppost to have a obd2 motor, then in that case no that won't work. But what if you have a 94 gsr motor and a 95 civic chassis, that is perfectly legal because it is the same obd, no where on the motor is there a stamp with a year on it .....when i went to the ref they just checked all the obd stuff to make sure it was compliante with the motor not the year of the car. just so you know its a 88crx with a obd1 b16
and the ref i went to said he would never pass a b20 block in anything besides a crv because its a suv motor. just to give you a heads up.
