latest trend? (SCC mag)
so i was out shopping with the gf this weekend, and wouldn't you know it she stops in the magazine isle and pics up some girl-type magazine. bored out of my mind i see the latest SCC issue on the stand. picking it up, i thumb past the article about the drift-0-rama BS and look at a few project cars. normally i just flip through and look at all the bling-ness and gay assed wings the ricers are using, but then something caught my eye. the tires on the project "street" car. according to SCC, they were Hoosier R3503's, but i'm positive they were the more common r3s03 offering. intrigued that a "ricer" would actually buy a tire that kicks ***, i flipped onto the next project car. it too had hoosier "street" tires on it as well. 6 of the 7 project cars i saw in the mag had hoosiers on. the other car was a "budget silvia" and it was rockin the falken azenis.
so, all in all,
on SCC for not knowing that the hoosier roadrace tire is a r3_s_03 (i'm sure it was a typo. the number 5 and the letter S look aweful alike... come on! i'm giving them the benefit of doubt!). i'm not sure what to make of the "tuners" using hoosiers as "street" tires. i can see some retard bitching (or sueing) that hoosiers caused him to crash his car because they can't handle rain at 80mph or some stupid chit like that. "i seen it in SCC, y0!"

Fortunately, ricers don't spend more than $100 for a set of tires.

Hoosiers on the street. Thats tite, y0.
They give the mags those ringer tires so that their shop looks like it really turns out a great car. "Look! 1.01g's on a skidpad! It outcorners a Viper!"
Suuure it does. For all of about 100 miles.

Given that at least 1/2 of that crowd will buy **** they see in magazines without having any real clue what they are purchasing, I'd say Hoosier is about to sell a few extra tires.
I think its great. I can picture some ******** dropping $700 for a set of these blingin "new" hoosiers and having 4 corded tires one month later. Assuming of course he makes it past the first rain storm without totalling himself.
Yep. I love it. But I'm an evil bastard <shrug>.

Nah, like travis said, ricers won't spend more than $100 on a set of tires.
Go ask in the EG forum what the "best tire ever" is, and I guarantee you won't get "Hoosier" as an answer from anyone. Nobody in there has probably even heard of Hoosier.
"FALkEn AZenIs y0!" seems to be the popular answer . . .

Well for $68/tire, its true!

I propose nate be banned for creating a thread about SCC.
That a "street car" challenge is run on race tires just goes to prove the worthlessness of that rag.

JeffS, why? Isn't Solo II Street Prepared run on DOT race tires? Personally, I don't really get the overwhelming antagonism towards Sport Compact Car, I probably read it once a year so I am not an authority but c'mon - this seems pretty heavy handed.

Hey, I'm not denying that they are the "best bang for the buck ever," but "best tire ever" is certainly questionable

Not to mention how half of the "Street Prepared/Modified/Touring/Whatever" cars are trailered to events . . .

Was it an autocross competition?
Admittedly, I have a personal bias against any competition that claims to be for street cars, but allows equipment that the cars would not run on the street - like race tires, drag slicks, etc. -- and yes, I do include Solo II in this as well.

Similar, yet entirely different at the same time...
. I'm sure plenty of people have driven Kumho's or Toyo's to events. I bet you'd have a VERY hard time finding anyone who's driven hoosiers to an event.
Anyway, that's not my point. My personal opinion is that a "street car" competition should be based on how the cars are ACTUALLY driven on the street, not how they theoretically could be driven if you really wanted to. I realize I'm in the minority and am just stating the opinion - not trying to sway anyone else's.

I've seen it.
The guy popped a tire on the way there...... and then went home and got his "backup" car which also had hoosiers on it. Unusual, but not impossible.

I've noticed that too... though it does work out rather nicely for the tuner that does put R-comps on their car. There have been a lot of shootouts I've read where 1 tuner tosses r-comps on the car and subsequently blows the doors off the other cars shod with street tires. The r-comps get SOME mention, but not enough to make it noticed that they were a really big factor in why the car did so well in all the handling tests.
I know of a certain really good CSP MR2 Spyder pilot who's driven Hoosiers a long distance in rain on the return trip from an autocross. Said person also said he also had a lot more gray hair when he reached his destination after driving with a white knuckle grip the whole time....
