Default check out my new home setup

well guys i finally got some batteries for my camera and took some pics of my christmas present an onkyo TX-SR501 6.1 digital home theater reciever. my dad gave me his old polk audio surround speakers to use for my center channel and rears. he got himself some new bigger polks for christmas

here's a pic of my reciever and my crappy APEX dvd player.

here's my front setup with my cheap RCA 27" tv with i have hooked up to the dvd player through an RF modulator, they front speakers are some old ADS speakers that my mom bought 20 years ago, they have a 6 inch woofer and 1" dome tweeter. surpirsingly they sound really really good and clean, they make bass all the way down to 52hz.

check out the speaker stand i made out of some scrap MDF, some 1X4's, and black spray paint.

here is one of my rear speakers, they are both mounted on the side walls in the back of the room facing toward each other about 6 ft off the ground.

and here are some pics of my dad's setup down in our basement
here's the yamaha reciever, panasonic progressive scan dvd player, ps2, and our HDTV digital cable box

here's a pic of the front, the TV is a panasonic 32" HDTV

here's a pic of his rears which are facing each other mounted about 6 feet off the ground

and i figure i would throw this one in, this is what my G/f got me for christmas

anyone have any suggestions as far as my speaker placement?

i thought about maybe adding a center surround speaker in the back but i think it might be too much. cause i have two extra speakers laying around, i also thought about drilling a small hole through the wall and putting a speaker in my bathroom which is right next to my room.

Sup Bradly,

The set up looks nice in your room. You might want to do something to hide those speaker wires

Check some websites to give you a good idea on speaker placement. I would advise to go aginst the second center channel, it would sound very odd!!

Or a cousin....? Thats a hell of a nice gift...my girl was very nice to me this new years and got me an external hard drive that badly needed. I was looking at a Husky set at Home Depot for 300 bucks for a 10 gallon tank, impact gun, rachet, grinder, chisel, and spray can, I just dont have the money or the space right now.

I agree with H22Luder with the fact that you need to hide those wires. If this isnt your perminant place, then get some monster thin wall speaker wire. Its about 1 x 1/8 inch white wire with one adhesive side that allows you to blend it in and look less noticible.

Here is my setup:

The TV and receiver were my parents additions to me wasting my summer income when I was 15....ironically enough my dad was in full support of me buying the HT system for our house

I would suggest trying to find a local store that sells damages electronics. A place nearby sells TV's where the box is damaged, or the back of the tv has a scratch, and they sell it at half off.

hey ryan, too bad my name is bradley. its not gonna be a second center channel, my reciever is a 6.1 reciever so it has capability to have a rear center surround but i think it will be too much for my room. im about to repaint my room so i'm going to paint over the speaker wires so they blend in with the walls, and once i get enough money im gonna build a sub. (an 8" sub in ported box with a 100 watt plate amp).

i would try and center the tv between teh left and right speakers if at all possible. i would also try and get a little more space between the speakers and the walls if tahts possible too.

i think the next thing i buy is gonna be a digi cam so i can post pics of my home setup too

The stuff from Moon is very nice but very pricey. Stereo preamps start around $2600. Multi-channel amps start around $4K. The only reasonably priced piece in their lineup is an integrated amp that goes for $1700. Even that can be considered pricey. However, their products get consistently good reviews.

I immagined that they cost a pretty penny, my uncle has them in his home theater. They have to have some serious output though, they are pretty big, larger than the average reciever. He has some speakers that were made in San Francisco (or maybe San Diego) that have seperate cabinets for two woofers (12s probably) and another cabinet that screws ontop for the 2 mids and a tweeter (or two). They look like really nice speakers, and sound very clear and precise.

digi cams aren't free you know. 20K sounds like a reasonable guess. i know between the processor and the main speakers its about 15K

I should probably take the amp out of my sig cause i havent had it in a while.

You know how challenging this is going to be? Think about it. Unless you make a powerd sub and figure out how to make a sub output on it in a quick fashion, I dont think it is going to be worth your time. You might aswell buy a sub like J's. Cause if its passive then you have to have all the speakers go through the sub or amp.

Im to lazy to post pics of our set up.

My Room:
- 27" Mitsubishi
- Dolby digital Philips Reciever
- Bose center Speaker
- Bose 201 Fronts
- Bose Rear
- Yamaha 10" Powerd sub.

Dads Set Up:
- 55" Mitsubishi HDTV
- Yamaha DD DTS Reciever
- Velondyne 12" Sub
- JVC 7 disc Progressive Scan DVD Player
- Direct TV TIVO
- Bose 301 Fronts
- Bose Rears
- Bose Center

He is plannign on installing something that shakes the floor based on the sound of what your watching.

How loud can you safely take your bose systems? Ive heard some people say that you cant take them too high since they are small drivers? None of my friends have bose systems and usually the bose stores have old dicks in them that wont actually allow you to test their product in their store.

it won't be very hard i have built tons of boxes, basically i just have to buy the sub and mount this plate amp to the box i build. the amp has an LFE input on it so i can run and LFE cable from my output on my reciever to the sub. that amp is 100 watts which should be more than enough to power a sub for my room in a ported enclosure.

if J comes down on the price for his sub i might just buy his, i will give him 125 for it. he bought that thing for dirt cheap off ebay a while ago.

that i'm not sure. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by integra-modder &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

those i'm not sure. I know the sophia's are in the 10-12K range, teh watt-puppy system 7 is 35k, the X1's are being phased out in favor of the X-2 Alexandrias which are rumored to be in the 140K area, the XS is 18G's plus 4 for the crossover. not sure about the watch pricing.

Wilson does make extremely expensive speakers but they sound very natural and image very well if pair with the right amp. if your uncle has the MAXX speakers pair with a moon amp he may not be getting the most from the speakers. i've heard the MAXX/ watch home theater setup controlled and powered by the Mark levonson N0. 40 console and 5 stereo amps bridged to mono and they sounded great....but then i heard the watt puppy system 7's with a halcro preamp and a pair of mark levinson no 33 monoblock amps and they blew the old setup away.

a few amps that come to mind that would be up to the task for thsoe speakers would be the Classe omega's, halcro DM58's, or the mark levonson no33's .

do you have any more info on what his setup is? ie source components and amp model numbers?

MOON A/V Attraction 7.1 Processor
MOON A/V Orion DVD Transport/Player
2 MOON A/V Titan Power Amplifier, not sure which exactly
then a various assortment of MD, laser disc, vhs, sat, and tape
63" Fujitsu Plasma
Some remote control system with about a 7" touch screen LCD.
In the basement there is a desktop pc that runs and manages power for a UPS system

Thats all I can think of right now.

I know that he doesnt do any research when picking his products. He has a company come out and do it for him, I guess by what you are saying that company was pretty stupid.
