You could also consider the new (in the US at least) Yamaha FZ6. Same style bike as the SV650.

You would not want to consider the FZ6
in my opinion.

Any particular reason? Not that many dealers have them yet, if any (soon though) so I don't think you have ridden one. Nor have I, but talk to a few Europeans about their Fazer's and you'll find it's a really great bike. Certainly on par with any other standard.

vtwin ownz, get the suzuki. fz6 has an r6 engine tuned for midrange. one ride on a twin and you'll love it. if you like the inline four than start on an older cbr or smaller.
the fz6 is a great bike. i myself am happy with my 02 svs because i picked it up for 2570 and its a great bike. should be getting my gel seat, bra, and seat cowl tomorrow

The Fz6 just isn't my cup of tea, it's not comfy, does not look at good etc etc. I have not ridden one but from what I have read I don't really like it. Besides I already own a SV so ya know I'm gonna be biased
Oh yeah, one more thing, the FZ6 is not a vtwin
hehe

I ride a 2003 SV650S and love the bike. My only complains is the gears feel kinda short on the freeway. If you can find a SV650 for a good price in better than average condition I would highly recommend it. SV650s are popular, making finding replacement parts easier. They handle very well, only item I heard need upgrading is the forks but that's if your over 150lbs or a very agressive rider.
My personal SV650S is mostly stock, only item I added was sliders and some other bolt ons. It's not as fast my friends 600 super sport but it's nice to have a motor with low end power. Also most of my riding is done on the smaller roads where a twin is more fun.
Another web site with lots of SV info is http://www.svrider.com
Hope this helps,

My cousin bought a 2003 Sv-650s, he just put a full exhuast, power commander, and a lower faring. It looks great, it rides confortable, and looks sleek. i will take some pictures of it for you if you want. Later Guys

I am about to buy a bike, for the first time. It is a toss up between the Monster 620i.e. and the Suzuki SV650. They are both very nice and affordable bikes. I need some experience riders opinions. I am having a hard time choosing.......

A: Hi DeWayne.. I looked into the BMW 650, the YAMAHA R6, AND THE HONDA..besides offcourse the 620 ie. I feel that though these bikes differ very minimally in their weight.. however the 620 ie is more lean and sleek at the crotch and to me that is more comforting. How ever the 620 ie has been marketed as an city bike..not a racing bike.. you are more upright on it when you ride unlike other racing models. All THE BEST PRASHANT - 04/17/2002
A: Hi DeWayne, Personally I'd go with the SV650. It has won just about every shootout that is has been in, including besting the ducati 750 monster in a test. Plus this year it has fully adjustable suspension front and rear and at a cost less than the 620. It also just missed making the 10 best for cycleworld, being named honorable mention. Dont get me wrong the Ducati is a nice bike but for better performance and price and SV650 is the winner here. Wade - 04/24/2002
A: DeWayne, I have owned the sv650 and my wife has a 600 monster so I am somewhat qualified to answer. The sv suspension stinks but the fork can be upgraded cheaply and it needs a new rear shock. Engine is great after you re-jet and put on an aftermarket muffler. Will not hold value real well. Monster less powerful, suspension a little better. Put on new high rise mufflers for cool factor. Will hold value better than sv. The only thing you really give up on the sv is the cool factor, and the ducati never ceases to get compliments where the sv was un-noticed. Also ducati maintenance higher, both cool bikes though. Anonymous - 04/25/2002
A: Dear DeWayne, a Ducati is a Ducati and a Suzuki is not. The Ducati has a soul! The twin V cylinders of the desmo engine has a great torque at low rpms... so does the suzuki, but not to compare to a 4 cylinder engine that starts off at 7000 rpms... Italian bikes and cars have always been known for the electrical problems and for many vibrations during riding, these times are over, Ducati Italy fused with Bosch and an american company! Hank - 05/19/2002
A: Hi Dewayne, i am exactly where u are/were with regards to deciding on these two bikes. Have u decided/bought either of these, and if you have can you give me your views; a post purchase ponder, if u will
thanx in advance Yasir Yasir Hussain - 05/30/2002 A: go ahead and get the ducati...you will pay more for a inferior bike, it will cost you more to maintain it since it's less reliable (Hey, it's italian after all...), you will pay more for insurance, and if a thief is out there up to no good and comes across a SV650 and a Monster620i.e., he will take YOUR bike! So go ahead and act on your instinct to look cool. (By the way, an Italian company forming a partnership with an American company for the purpose of 'fixing bugs'...now that sounds scary! Can anybody say Harley...) chris - 05/31/2002
A: Heart says Ducati, brain says SV. I have riden a Monster 750 and loved the style, color choices, comfort, and linearability. I'd think reliability is good, however maintenance will be more. I don't know the difference, but I would try to test drive each if you can. A great dealer in any case is important. Good findings. I'm in same situation, and personally I'd get the Ducati-- has more "soul". But that's just me.
Anonymous - 06/25/2002 A: try to go for 750 mosnter, a better suspension and little taller, needs a lot of looking after, need lots of money to maintain, parts are exxxxxpensive, that suzuki sucks compared to this bike, monster is the way to go if you like sound looks and CHICKS LOVE IT> bobby - 07/02/2002
A: Motorcycles are cool--I think we can all agree on that. So, if you can afford to, get the coolest bike you can get--and that would be the Ducati. nuff said Rich - 07/19/2002
A: My partner has owned both, trading in her '96 monster 600 for a '01 SV (faired) In her opinion the SV handles better, has a sweeter gearbox (i agree) is more reliable (i agree) and is better finished. However, when she talks about her SV she says what a great 'bike' it is and when she talks about her ducati she says what a great 'ducati' it was. She always turns her head if a monster is in the vicinity and has a slight look of regret in her eyes. Point i guess im making is that the SV is the better 'bike' but the monster is more than that. Ducati ownership is a special thing. When the world runs out of petrol you will be able to say you owned a Ducati. Choose with the heart and enjoy the Monster (you know it makes sense!) A: i went from a Suzuki gs 500 to Duc 620 ie the difference is night and day. Duc is a much better choice. Plus I like naked crotch rockets. bought i also dropped my Suzuki once and i would never want to do that to a duc. chris - 09/18/2002
A: Well this is a good few months after your posting but... A lot of good repies here and a few people with thier heads up thier assess. Bottom line chicks like bikes, 95% of them don't give a rat's *** what you ride. As long as it's shiney and that's the bottom line! I have known some ugly (I mean ugly) guy's get good looking girl's just because they had a bike (Yes they are very shallow, I know). Now for some of these guy's telling you to go with the Ducati for the chick factor? they obviously have never owned a bike and spend far too much time cranking off to the girls on the covers of the sport bike magazines. ****! just go into a shopping mall with a friends (if you don't own one) motorcycle helmut under your arm if you don't believe me. When some girl comes up and asks you what you ride give her sum bullshit bike that doesn't exist and she will do one of two things. (1) eyes will glaze over and she will have no idea what it is but go along with it and mention her friends boyfriends bike, this is your time to score... (2) she will call your bluff at which point you tell her you have a (? name a real bike) you just dropped it off at the shop and won't have it back for a few days, (that's why you are taking the bus), again this is your time to score. Both cases she never saw the bike but she will be all over you. Yes you lied (you shallow bastard) but you never wanted her to stick around anyway. Now that the advice on girls is over let's get back to bikes... Yes the Ducati is a sweet ride if you can afford it, but the Suzuki is the bike you want. Remember the part I just mentioned about the bike being in the shop? (Ducati need I say more?) The Suzuki is reliable & carries more than enough substance to allow you to hold your head proud. You mentioned affordable, If money was no object then you wouldn't be looking at a Ducati 620 you would be going much bigger. Of that I am certain!. One more little story now that I am remembering my past... When I was 15 not old enough to ride a street bike, I rode a 1985 Honda spree. Most of the girls at school had no interest in me until I took off my helmut, after that girls were no longer a problem (well yes the became a problem). Anyhow It was Christmas eve and I was at a Biker party (And I do mean Biker). There was plenty of snow on the ground and one guy who lived up the street rode down the sidewalks on his Harley with its custom studded tires. I was the youngest there by far. Most of these guy's scared the **** out of me. There was a bunch of us in the living room drinking (yes I was underage), One guy piped up "hey kid what do you ride?" with a laugh and the room went silent. I thought I was going to die a good 16-17 people all looking at me waiting for a reply. Well I swallowed my pride and said "I'm only 15, so all I've got is a little scooter". Well that broke the silence in a hurry. The next thing I know another guy shouted and the room quieted down a little and he bellowed "at least he's on two wheel's" to that glasses and beer bottles went up into the air and it didn't matter that I rode a scooter!. I don't ride a scooter anymore but that night has never left my thoughts. Even when I see someone on a piece of crap bike. I still wave to him/her, if they are stuck on the side of the road I pull over and offer some help. The trew reason we ride is to be on two wheel's, whatever they may be. The fact that girl's like guy's on bikes is a bonus. So don't but something that you cannot afford. You'll need the extra cash for those extra date's you will be going on. Wyatt - 09/25/2002

One of the appealing thing about the SV line is the fact that it's a VTwin. Useable, no need to downshift, just twist the throttle, torque. Hope to acquire an SV1K this summer.
