Default "misfiring" sound and bogging during acceleration roughly around 1-3.2K RPMs...wut's going on??...PL

I have a '98 Civic EX (D16) with a short-ram intake and 2.25 inch custom cat-back. My car's been fine like this for the past two years without any problem.
I have about 98K miles on the car.

Just recently, I'd say about 3-4 days ago, my car's been making a "misfiring" sound and it bogs slightly during acceleration roughly around 1-3.2K RPMs and the check engine light BLINKS. It's pretty much fine once i cruise past that RPM range, and by all means, it starts up fine.

at first, i thought it was a fubared cat converter/exhaust leak/manifold leak. i took the car into a muffler shop and they told me my entire exhaust system is fine and that the problem seemed to be from dirty injectors. i was instructed to get a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, but after trying that out...no improvement.

so i then took it to a mechanic who took the car for a 20 min drive. the verdict from him was that i needed a tune-up, specifically new plugs, wires, rotor, and distributor. i thought this made sense, 'cuz my car has not gotten a tune-up yet.

but then someone told me that alls i need are new plugs and wires and pcv valve...i was told that the rotor and distributor should be fine 'cuz the car has an "electronic" ignition system.

SO...my question is...what do you guys think is the precise cause of the problem??...and putting into GREAT CONSIDERATION that i'm pretty dayam broke at the moment...how can i go about fixing this problem with the least amount of money spent (assuming i can do the labor, which i'm sure i can)???

THANX!! ur help is really appreciated

SORRY ABOUT THE REPOST....JUST NEED MORE FEEDBACK, THANX =D

I had that same problem in my Civic. It was my wires. I would check your plugs (gap, fubar-ness), then replace your wires if the plugs don't fix it. Think of it as an upgrade.

i'm pretty sure i know what it is... i might be wrong tho... i think there might be some moister getting into your distributer.. so do the full tune up... plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor, u might want to replace your fuel filter too..
i had the same problem and it was because there was moister in my distributer... it was getting in there because i had to drill a small hole on my cap to run wires for my MSD ignition. and i didn't silicone up the hole so there was some moister in there...
but b4 u bring it to a mechanic u can check it out yourself... its just 3 8mm bolts that hold it on... just check it out for a little bit of moister.
good luck

Dude, I wonder if thats whats wrong with my car......I too have a hole in the cap for an MSD, which I have removed this week. But my car has been bogging out before, when the wire was in the hole, so I dont think much moisture if any coudl work its way through...

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago with mine. I checked and changed the plugs, even though the plugs that were in it were fine I still went ahead and changed em. I had a bad plug wire. I'd say check the plugs, wires, and distributor.
