Took the lid off the Icebox tonight...
Wow, what a different sound. Not as good as my AEM, but interesting. I noticed it when I took the lid off when the car was idling. It made a humming noise with a hint of a whistle. I guess that's how the foam filters sound. I leak-checked all the connections and didn't find any. So I took it for a spin around the block. It's a different sound, but I have no plans of leaving the lid off. Are those foam filters sturdy enough to be left exposed like that?
Yeah, I took the lid off one time and it sounds cool....BUT I notice a loss of torque down low
I didn't like it at all...So I put that cover back on...Did you notice that too??? Yeah, the foam filters are sturdy enough to be left exposed...

K&Ns are constructed to withstand some incidental impact, and that's why you can leave them exposed. However, I wasn't sure about the internal construction of the Comptech foam ones. Thus...the nature of my query.
Comptech filters are fine to run enclosed or exposed, it's a pretty rigid filter (you'll find out when you clean it). Sounds great (especially with aluminum short-ram), but loss of torque is no fun....i've gotten alot of compliments for the sound of the icebox vs. stock at autocrosses, it's that subtle anger that it has.
Open cover.....won't the hot air in the engine bays be sucked in? I ran open cover once and my car felt slow. At the time, I was fun dragging my friend's 01 Eclipse. I beat it the first two times by a car length (it's a small area that only allows me to go up to second red line)...then I kept losing and can't pull on him anymore. I like the sound, but the performance...

Don't feel bad. I drove my R yesterday for the first time in two months (after jump starting it). I didn't notice any loss of power with the top off, but I have nothing recent to compare it to.
I just took off my airbox yesterday leaving my Comptech drop in air filter exposed...After some "test" runs, dang, it pulls HARD up top...Hey, I kinda like it...Hmmmm..should it stay or go...that's what i'm deciding now...This time around I didn't notice any loss of torque...could be the chilly weather helping out too...I also checked out my filter and no damage from the engine heat
When I go drag racing next month, I'll leave the lid off and see if it makes a difference

The torque loss is true.
Oh, and for the record, those who say the hot air intake is better for Spec B's is full of ****.
Did back to back runs on the dyno. Run 1 was with a AEM, run 2 was with a stock ITR air hose w/ Comptech filter.
AEM did better from 4000-5000 by at least 5hp. Then it was identical from about5200-7500. Over 7500, the AEM was within 1 or 2hp from the hot air intake.
Peak numbers on run 1 was 194.0 and 138.6(AEM)
Peak numbers on run 2 was 190.9 and 135.0(hot air)
But the hot air sounds a bit more aggressive. AEM has a loud, trombone like sound.
