Default 2001 Honda Accord possible transmission problem?

Hello,

My 2001 Honda Accord's transmission seems to have jerky movements when i shift from Park to Reverse and Drive. and this only happens during the 1st 10 mins of driving and it's especially noticeable during cold days.

and the shifting from 1 thru 4 are not as smooth as before.. i changed the ATF last night and eventhough i think it's acting alot better i can't really tell since it's not that cold today..

tia if anyone could shed some light on this..

good thing is that it's still under warranty!

Well HOnda transmissions are noted for not being seamless but if it seems to have gotten a LOT worse, then you should take it to the dealer and have them check it out given it's got the extended warranty on the tranny. My Mom's 98 shifts rather hard from 1st to 2nd when cold but then gets better as it warms up, she's at around 100K on it. So I figure it's just a Honda thing, my cousin's 96 shfits every gear hard.

Also remember that you really didn't change ALL The fluid, you only got 3 of the quarts that the whole tranny holds. I think it holds around 7? Anyhow you should drive around a bit and then do another change and perhaps another, only way to really get it all out would be one of those machines that sucks it all out or disconnect the tranny cooler line and let it drain/fill at the same time to get all the old fluid out. I change my mom's for her every other oil change, figure it can't hurt to keep the fluid nice and fresh. Especially given Honda's auto tranny reputation.

Thanks for the info. I guess i'll take the thing to the local dealer and have them checked out next week.

It's good to hear that this could be an Honda thing tho..cus i sure don't want my wife to get stranded because of this. I have heard that the TL's transmission has known issues but i didn't know that Accords have them as well??

Took it to the dealership today after noticing the "Check Engine" light on. Come to find out..the transmission died...Honda needs to completely change out a new one. I'm very disappointed at Honda..it's my first car..and i was looking into buying the Camry until my friends litterly talked me into getting this Accord...

I bet if i bought that Camry...we'd be still driving it without any problems.
i don't care about styles all i want is a reliable trouble free car for my wife...and this Honda is the exact opposite. I will never buy anything from them again... this is just bullshit

It happens to all cars....honda's are one of the most reliable cars in the market plus they have good power great gas mileage and killer looks....hell my car is 13 years old and it still looks good. Granted cars will have problems and in no way should this dictate your feelings on honda......IMO if it were another car it would have been a lot worse...not to mention honda should be fixing it for free unlike most other manufactures, honda has really great coverage for warranty. All in all you made the right decision and after all; all cars are put together via machines and humans not to mention just flat out faulty equipment.

sorry to hear your tranny gave up the ghost.

About how many (or few) miles did the car have?

the killer is the car only has 45k on it. bought it brand spankin new in Jan of 2001.

i have owned a POS '91 Mazda 626 and it is still running at 166k..granted the clutch died on me when it was at 165k..but i have never been in such a situation where a reputable car's transmission of all things would just quit. like i said before..i don't care about looks..i just want my wife to be safe that's all..and i'm very dissappointed to say the least.

there's a warranty extension on your car i believe. You should have an extended factory warranty on the powertrain till 7yrs or 100k. But i think you already know that...

It's only on the transmissions, not the rest of the powertrain. And it seems the J-series V6 trannys were the worst afflicted..

nuc79, thanks for the link.

i guess that article is assuring since not the entire powertrain is affected..but i still think Honda should have mailed out something to me...
