Default strange metallic noise

I have noticed over the last couple of weeks that my car has been making a strange metallic swirling noise. This noise occurs when i apply my brakes and also when the car is at a steady speed. I am confident that this is brake wear indicators that the owners manual suggests but i am not exactly sure. If this is the case, i obviously need some new front brake pads. Oh yeah, one another question, when i put my car into reverse, the car squeals then stops once it is put into drive or park. Is this another glaring reminder that i need my brake pads to be replaced or is it something else? Thanks for any help.

Noise coming from the brakes when driving and when braking huh? All of the brakes or just one? If it is just one it COULD be dirt or a heatshield. If it is all then it also could be dirt, but unlikely. Yes probably need brakes. Just bring it in to your local mechanic to have it checked. The reverse thing, is this while you are driving in reverse or when the car actually goes into reverse at a stand still? Also is this an automatic transmission or a manual? I would have to say if it sounds like it does when you are driving forward then it is probably the same problem. Otherwise it could be somehing in your transmission but I doubt it because you aren't having any problems with 5th (doubles as your reverse gear). Hope I helped a little.

I am pretty sure that all of the brakes are this way. I have an automatic and the squeal occurs when i am actually going into reverse. I thought at first it was my tranny fluid, but the level is fine, so i have no idea what that the problem is.

sounds like either worn brake pads or they need some anti-squeel compound put on.
