Default i-VTEC Question...

I always wonder about this ever since the RSX came out... What is it and how is it different the the original VTEC?? Acura states that "i-VTEC™, a more sophisticated version of the unparalleled Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system that extracts ample low-rpm torque and high-rpm power from the same engine." But have anyone notice the difference?? Previous Integra owners and now current RSX owners, I would like to know your opinions on this...

I know theres another thread in this forum about the i-VTEC... But it didnt answer the questions that I have or clearly and fully explain the difference between the two, so if anyone can fill me in, I'd really appreciate it... Thanks...

Here's a pretty detailed article about i-VTEC:

Correct, only the K20A3 that is on the RSX Base has the dual runners, but not the A3 on the Si. The intake manifold on the Si is just like the one on the Type-S.

i vtec is really simple..its a combination of traditional vtec along with VTC which is variable timing controll..basically it advances or retards the timing on the cams depending on load..advancing and retarding increases or decreases overlap..that is why they dont use EGR because when there is overlap some of the exhaust gasses gets into the intake and burns again.."somewhat".

the K20a3 is slightly different i believe..there are 4 valves, 2 intakes and 2 exhaust..on the k20a3 (not 100% sure) one intake valve opens all the way and the other doesnt open that much unless you are flooring it...this set up is used to increase gas milage and emissions (i think)...

some one please correct me....i got it in my head..i just dont kno how to write it down...

Even though with the different in valve timing, can the driver actually tell the difference?? Or is it just a neat lil thing thats just there....

in the A3, there is no sudden surge. VTC is a continous and smooth transition. There is a harmonic increase in sound in the 5000s but the curves show no real big jumps.

in the A2, on the other hand (Type-S), you will feel the traditional surge.

It's K20A. There is no 1.

like the above post states, there is no 1, its just the K20A. some people will put a 1 there for reference.

but the VTC systems on the A2 an the A1( as you like to call it) are identical

Targa, I was looking for that post. Can I link to it as needed (pretty much every time someone buys a new Si)?

LoL . . . sure. I originally wrote it here on H-T, but I can't find the thread for some reason. I was considering re-writing it to make it more understandable also.

this is a well known fact

I was stating the fact that there is more than just one K-series with the dual runner system.
