Default Straight Pipe Question!

Hey,

Ok I am wanting to get a straight pipe for my 89 Civic, it will be a racecar so it does not have to be quiet or anything. How much usually will it cost? Does it have to fit the origional Honda style/shape? I cant think of how you could do it and have it high enough to not scrape the ground, and also what does turndown do? Thanks!

Simon

If you're going to do track days, leave it as is, or if there's nothing there, get a quiet muffler on it.

Unmuffled cars make it hard on the instructor (we cannot communicate very well) and they're just and earsore to the corner workers.

You can do a stright pipe for about $20ish suaully but they typically are really nasty to deal with the sound and not the best method for performance. These cars like very low restriction but that can be accomplished nicely with a very short, bigger diameter tube and a cheap racing bullet syle muffles can to knock the nastiness out of it. If you will have an instructor in the car or sound limitations, you can still have pretty good performance cheaply with a managable sound and not to much back pressure.

After doing Supertrapps, etc with more expensive parts, I have usually done my racecar exhausts behind the header for under $40 and not felt that I was compromising performance.

That's not exactly true. I was only 1 dB away from being black flagged off the track at the last event at AMP, and a couple of my friends weren't so lucky. Get an idea of the noise requirements in your region and make sure you are well below them (because you'll always be louder than you expect). I'm currently redoing my system to make it quieter so that I don't have to worry about being a little noiser on a cold day.

on my 89 civic I've just got straight pipe, a cherry bomb and then a sidepipe. Probably cost $50 total. I used to have a downpipe after the muffler but got a ticker for it since I drive it on the street every once in awhile. For only racing you could do the downpipe and save a few pounds. I've got pictures of it in the link in my signature if you want to look at it. Its not ultra loud but it is a little loud.

Ohhh.... Ryan. You should know better than that. Last time I checked STS rules required a stock cat!

And what do you mean it's a little loud? I think I've heard you say everytime I meet you about how annoyingly loud it is.

I do have a stock cat. It is loud for daily driving but its nowhere near as loud as real race cars or any IT car.
