This happens all the time in Driving schools (HPDE), especially in the beginner/novice group - where the driver skill is the limiting factor at how fast you go rather than the capability of the car.

Send an experienced guy out in a decently prepped civic and they'll roll exotics all day long in a beginner group.

I have video of Corey rolling a F355 at Summit before his car was a race car. The person in the F355 was timid.

mad 1337 y0!

Sometimes I want to go back to an intermediate DE so I can know what it's like passing cars again. Then I remember how annoying waiting for a point-by is and I change my mind.

Like others have said, that video is from an HPDE in the novice to intermediate group.

You can bet the guy driving the $200k F40 is going to be a lot more timid then the kid driving the $2k Civic. Plus driving a ~100HP FF Civic on track is much easier then driving a ~500HP MR Ferrari.

I grew up in the PCA HPDE program and we would roll the 911TTs all the time in the novice groups. Once those guys learned to drive the cars and I was running in advanced, it was a much different story.

EDIT: Add to the fact that that is Road Atlanta. Most people in high dollar HPDE cars don't want to eat wall.

I almost bought the rear bumper of a F348 Challenge car while driving my stock Sentra when he braked harder than me for turn 10 after taking a pass without a point-by.

Then he disappeared down the front straight with his 39,887 hp.

Yep.
Something like this might make some Honda guys feel pretty good but in the end its meaningless.
That said, as Zsolt mentioned most of us feel like hot **** when we do this in intermediate and beginner group. Then you get up to advanced and instructor and it doesn't much happen anymore.
Then you start racing W2W, and find that its tough passing a guy in a 1.6 Miata.

LOL. I was shadowing a 355 at VIR (in a miata) and timed it just right so that I got a good run out of Oak Tree to assure the point by. Got the point, kept track left to over take... and then I heard the most lovely sound as he ran (not walked) me down the back straight. The next lap, he realized that 25% throttle in that thing was too much! Good story not b/c I passed a 355 in int. group, but b/c he didn't realize how little it took to blow my tinny little doors off.

On first viewing, "sweet."

But in reality: In a DE event, it doesn't mean a whole lot. Except to the guy that's doing the "racing."

No offense to any of you but wether it's a Ferrari track day or a NASA HPDE, BMWCCA, PCA or whatever, about 3/4ths of the drivers aren't driving anywhere near the limit.

Since I own both (Ferrari and Honda race cars) I can assure you that the % of slow drivers at either a HPDE or a Ferrari track day is about the same. I saw plenty of EVO's and Scooby's at the last HPDE at Summit that couldn't even get close to breaking 1:30's there.

It's kind of cool to see a Civic take it to a F40 but it deosn't say much for the driver of the F40 and is useless in comparing the F40 with a Civic.

I have passed Ferraris costing $500,000 - $1 million, some of them with 600-700 hp but that simply means I am a better driver not that I should be bragging that my 100K car is faster than their $1 million car.

Just so you all don't think all Ferrari drivers can't drive here are two of my videos:

http://jpkofod.lunarpages.com/fastlap.mpg (2.08 at Watkins Glen on worn tires)

http://jpkofod.lunarpages.com/TestA.mpg (annoying a few half million dollar exotics)

Caution these are huge files so if you have dial up forget downloading them.

Even more fun is hounding ZO6's with my 140 hp Acura race car. I make sure they all know it's not a 200+ hp VTEC monster to annoy them further.

Regards,

Jon Kofod

I rolled a 550 hp Porsche 993TT with my Honda Michelin 1988 Civic (92 hp) at Tremblant this summer in w2w, but it was pouring rain and I was on brand new Toyos...

Wow. I am never going to complain about the walls at Road Atlanta again.
Cool vid. Less music, more sweet hotness exhaust note.

it's called, civic guy thinks it's a race....F40 guy knows he doesn't want a civic driven into his $40k+ rear bumper so he points him by....
and open track event is no teller of truth.
smart guys w/ money will point by cheaper cars to get into a stretch w/o cars to keep from wrapping up their half million dollar garage queens.

I like the videos! Keeping pace with the 333sp and F40 in your 355 is pretty cool - though that 360 challenge car looked to be flying on a fast lap.

If you are pushing a ferrari on track you better know how to drive - or at least have funds available to replace the wrecked one if you don't know how to drive...

Vracer111, who wouldn't mind owning any ferrari (save for the mondial's...)...but would especially like a 288 GTO if it ever became possible.

I would just like to clarify this is not serious in any way.

Everyone gets the point by once in their life.

His was just a little bit sweeter than most in sure.

The blazingly fast 360 in the video is actually a Group N 360 GT similar to the one that won the Grand Am Championship the past two seasons and the ones you see in ALMS and at LeMans. It's much faster than a standard 360 Challenge with about 100 more horsepower in unrestricted form.

The fast guys in the video were all doing around 2:05's to 2:08's. He was doing 1:57's on a different planet than the rest of us.

Regards,

Jon

What's a good 333SP time around there? That guy's line was, uh, interesting...

A couple of years back I was running in the Advanced group at Road Atlanta in my then Solo I Street Prepared GSR. I was doing well and hadn't been passed the entire session.
I exited turn 7 on to the back straight all by myself. Climbed the hill (where the bridge is now) and checked my mirrors... Nothing there.
As I got ready to turn in for turn 9 (the black flag station) I noticed a red spot in my mirror. It was getting bigger pretty quick. But... nah... no way it could catch me before turn 10. It was still pretty far back there.
I get down to about the #4 brake marker and check my mirrors again.
OMFG!!! There is a 333sp bearing down on me HARD. I point him by left and brake pretty deep (my usual spot) and he is next to me and and just now hitting the brakes. He turns in to 10A and is gone over the hill before I even exit turn 10B.

Its a real eye opener to get passed like that. As mentioned above, not even on the same planet.
A talented driver in an F40 could do about the same thing to a Civic. Even if the Civic was well driven.

Again, not bashing on anyone. Just spreading some reality.
A brave younger guy with some skill and some willingness to throw a Civic around a little bit will always outrun the 55 year old doctor whos taking his brand new 911 turbo out to the track for the first time because his buddy convinced him it would be fun.
There really is no real comparison here.

Jon, thank you for those videos. Good way for me to finish the year. Needless to say, I am quite jealous (long time Ferrari fan here) and can only hope that I will one day be able to afford a prancing horse on my hood. I have always contended that Ferraris made the sweetest exhaust music of any other car and I stand by that statement (beauty being in the ear of the beholder, of course.)

Happy new year!

Here's hoping to be making some beautiful honda music next year.
