i was thinking of swapping out the stock double diaphragm ITR brake booster for a single diaphram one ( probably one off an EK ), so that i can get better brake feel. anybody done this before?
sounds like a bad idea... Remember that the brake system was engineered as a WHOLE SYSTEM. When you start changing things like brake boosters, you are messing with a calibrated system...
you will probably have to change the proportioning valve as well.

if its stupid then why are a lot of subaru guys doing the same thing? single diaphram boosters are stiffer ( for lack of a better word ) than dual diaphrams, probably has something to do with the booster construction. plus it would give you less power assist, possibly resulting in better modulation. just something to think about

"Feel" is a very subjective and ambiguous term but brake "feel" has a lot to do with fluids and pads. Braking performance is a combination of the braking system, suspension and tires working together...
What do you find lacking in terms of feel w.r.t. the stock Type R system? Do you realize the Type R braking system is already VERY VERY VERY GOOD?
What are you using right now?
Is this for street driving?

don't diss something that you haven't even tried. check out http://www.spdusa.com/soft.htm
Speed USA isn't just putting a different Subaru booster on.
They are manufacturing their own product designed specifically to harden the brake pedal feel.
Although they appear to honestly believe in the single diaphragm construction, I think it's probably a manufacturing and cost consideration more than it's an endorsment of the single diaphragm design.

i will repeat chad's offer.. hell, i'd even throw in some cash..
I've got an EG brake booster I'd gladly swap that's currently on my R..
I can tell you EXACTLY what it feels like, since i've driven it like this.. GARBAGE.. Much more brake travel, much less actual braking.. in short, a very very bad idea..

mstewar, let me get this straight, you have an eg booster on your type r? do you have the 1" master cylinder? i'm talking about using the EK single diaphragm brake booster along with the ITR 1" master cylinder. i don't see how this will result in longer pedal travel

I have the exact same set-up on my EG and i have 0 problems.

Ausmith, when the car was wrecked, swapped all the ITR stuff to his hatch.. I didn't realize the booster was the wrong one til we went to bleed the brakes.. Ausmith confirmed to me that it is the booster off his EG civic.. it results in longer pedal travel, trust me.. and the braking sucks..

I put my ITR 5 lug on my 5th gen hatch....along with Blue calipers....
with the already "upgraded" 15/16ths master.... it still feels like shiet....
I'm lookin to swap over the 1inch master now, I just don't have time yet, but the pedal with the 15/16ths still sinks more than it should and when it finally grabs (using OEM pads) it's very sudden....
not good brake feel at all..... vague and ill representative of what my setup OUGHT to be.

Have you ever driven a WRX? their brakes are not even on the same planet as the Type R. I drove my buddies, and when i hit the same braking zone i was using for the R, i thought i was going to drive off the runway. I am trying to figure out how what you read about improving the WRX ****-*** brakes has to do with improving the Brake system from a Type-R. If i had the mis-fortune of owning a WRX, i would be open to any ideas on how to make is stop faster.

nope.
bore on both units must match.
