Why ??
Nowadays, the piston ring seal is really what the break in process is all about. Contrary to popular belief, piston rings don't seal the combustion pressure by spring tension. Ring tension is necessary only to "scrape" the oil to prevent it from entering the combustion chamber.

If you think about it, the ring exerts maybe 5-10 lbs of spring tension against the cylinder wall ...
How can such a small amount of spring tension seal against thousands of
PSI (Pounds Per Square Inch) of combustion pressure ??
Of course it can't.

How Do Rings Seal Against Tremendous Combustion Pressure ??

From the actual gas pressure itself !! It passes over the top of the ring, and gets behind it to force it outward against the cylinder wall. The problem is that new rings are far from perfect and they must be worn in quite a bit in order to completely seal all the way around the bore. If the gas pressure is strong enough during the engine's first miles of operation (open that throttle !!!), then the entire ring will wear into
the cylinder surface, to seal the combustion pressure as well as possible.

i've heard variants of this breakin technique before and it does sound good on paper. do the rings actually use the combustion pressure to be pushed against the cylinder wall?

this has been posted and discussed many times on this board.

i have had excellent experience with the "run it hard" method of break in. i recently inspected my race engine which was run for 0 miles before being taken to the track and it dyno'd very well and everything looks excellent internally after an entire season of drag racing with over 100 passes on the motor.

my personal opinion is that manufacturs' developed the "motor break-in" theory as a way to minimize potential engine wear and avoid unnecesary warranty claims.

 

ok 200 miles than change your oil, all that you are wearing in is the rod bearings and the piston rings, everything else does not matter, then 500 miles, than 700 miles, than u can get on it. the longer your baby your motor the faster it will be. just take care of it.

 

do whatever the engine builder says

if there is a compression or oil burning problem due to bad break in procedures you can say you did what he wanted you to do.

not something you read on the net

i played the no vtec for 1000 miles in my car.. and changed the oil before doing putting it in vtec.. felt pretty good to me..

amen....better safe than sorry.

 

Blah... I had vtec from 13 miles till now and no signs of power loss or failure. I have between 230- 235 psi compression too as of a 1k miles ago.

Drive it hard and never look back

 

just drive it and dont worry about break in haha

i would have to agree.......heat cycle the engine a few times....then drive it hard and don't look back...

nice! i did the standard drive-like-a-***** for the 1st 1000miles and my compression test showed 230psi in all 4 cylinders but my motor eats alot of oil.

lol.. no oil consumption here.. at least not in those first 1100 miles.. more on that later though..

By saying you can't "look back" I hope you don't mean because there's so much smoke in the rear

 

120 local miles.. additional 900 highway miles, but I tried not to keep the RPMs constant.. no revving over 5k RPMS..

Then changed the oil and filter, and ran it going in and out of vtec.. another few hundred miles or so this way so far..

The car I helped put together and did not even get to ride in it before it left for storage...

 

I did an 8200rpm clutch drop leaving the dealership with 11 miles on my car. Still runs strong 75,000 miles later.

 

I also did a clutch drop leaving the dealer and my father and a friend thought I was completely out of my mind doing that with 13 miles on the car
