Default Dumb intake question from me #1

What is the "resonator" people talk about removing? Is it the lid for the airbox or the tube that extends down from the box or something else?? And whats the real deal with power gains/losses associated with its removal?

the resonator is the big white box that is part of the intake....if you take the lining off of the passenger side wheel well, you can see it very easily

Because it can be a restriction in the path of the air. It exists solely to quiet the intake noise. So by removing it, you will gain a few dB in sound, but the air will flow more freely through the intake.

Also some people must remove it in order to install a cold air intake like the AEM or Injen which has the filter sitting in the fenderwell where the resonator box usually sits.

Ah...Most people claim they save weight. But I picked one up before and it's just a hollow plastic box that let sound echo back and forth in the chambers to reduce noise I guess. I wouldn't say it weigh more than a few pounds.

Anyhow, the major advantage I see removing it is the sound quality and the direct airflow. If you unbolt the whole thing, you would see a little hole underneath the bottom tray of your intake box. That hole is also near the header.

I don't really see a point in removing it if you don't do some custom duct work. Kinda like a homemade icebox if you route the bottom opening to some air.

Actually I've heard removing it cost you a few horsepower. Its supposed to be tunned to pulse air or some ****.

I removed the res from my old GSR... just cut the box away from the intake hose and left that under the fenderwell... It was really a bit too loud and my wife gave me a dirty look everytime she punched it... not a good comparison with the ITR airbox as the GSR res exits back into the motor compartment, so I was getting a lot more cold air with the box gone... The ITR already exits under the fenderwell..

I say if you want the cool sound remove the box but find a wrecked car ( even a GSR ) and cut the tube out of the resonator and attach it under the fender... this will keep the intake out of the water if you go swimming.. and save you ruining your origional resonator... I am going to get a g-tec pro and then start experimenting with different low buck mods and post some hard numbers...

that's if anybody thinks the info would be welcome...

All we need is some ice & couple of refreshments with the new cooler, that we got from Honda! Well, at least that's what I was saying to myself and to my friends. The first time I took that out of the car.

not to beat a dead horse.. but in response to
the post jond mentioned i'd like to pose
two questions.

1) if the resonator is supposed to help in the
airflow.. why don't competch, aem and the
other intake manufacturers have a resonator
in their solutions?

2) and.. what is the performance comparison
between the mugen/spoon systems and the
aem/comptech/iceman systems? do they use
the resonator?

sorry to beat this topic into the ground.. just
curious. hey.. dead horse.. i think thats a pun.

Yep... dead horse...
I don't know the answer. In fact I'm just reporting what FBP_1171 posted in the link up top. As far as why AEM doesn't do it. Well I'm not 100% convenced that 90% of AEM's hp isn't from the highflow filter. But anyways...

To quote him:
"On the CL Type S Honda calls it "Resonance Effect Super Charging". It is not really supercharging, per se, but the pressure waves do add HP." "...That is what they are referring to when they say "tuned exhaust" and "tuned intake"."

I pulled my resonater out recently to see if the very reliable but Dyno could feel any gains on my otherwise completely Stock Type R. I did build the "DIY" Icebox with some 3" ABS pipes from Home Depot, and ran it down to a 3" to 4" adapter directly behind the passenger side turn signal. I have pics and I'll get them up as soon as find a place to host them. I was very happy with the end result.
Anyways, I "think" I can feel a very very slight low end gain, and the VTEC crossover seemed to smooth out a lot over stock, thats about it. I'll hit the Dyno soon to test it out.

Hey, I resemble that remark.... Somebody I know who works for Honda told me about the pulses. Does it really help? I don't know.

The resonator is more than just to make the intake quiet, but the difference (and the reason why most people remove it including me) is that it reduces airflow. The "resonance effect" is minimal on the R, but it is there. Just pulling the resonator out you should see at least 1-2HP gain.

Having said that, I gained 2HP at the wheels just by dropping in the Comptech filter, which is now supplemented by an Icebox.

Weight savings is minimal. The stock box is less than 10lbs.
